FENG SHUI YOUR HOME FOR COMFORT & PRODUCTIVITY

By Family, Home Comforts, Life & Style No Comments

Literally translating to “wind water”, feng shui is an ancient Chinese method of organising one’s external surroundings to achieve inner balance. According to this concept, even inanimate objects contain energy, or “chi”, which can be harnessed to our benefit if properly positioned. Think of organisation gurus like Marie Kondo, whose popular books and Netflix series have reminded people that individuals and their homes are connected. A messy person would probably result in a messy home, and vice versa.

If you want to harmonise yourself and your surroundings, try these feng shui instructions on achieving the maximum amount of positive energy in your home. You might see a real change!

GET RID OF CLUTTER

It’s often said that a cluttered house results in or is indicative of a cluttered mind. While we’re not advocating for a form of radical minimalism, humans undeniably display a tendency towards hoarding, especially out of sentiment.

If you’re holding onto a bunch of items you don’t even like (think of all those unwanted gifts you’ve stashed away that never see the light of day), they’re not only taking up useful space, but are also a constant source of negative energy. Replace them with items that bring you joy and see how your days immediately brighten up! After all, William Morris once said: “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.”

BEDROOMS SHOULD BE SANCTUARIES

Being the place where you rest and recharge for a new day, the bedroom is perhaps the most important area in your home. Because of this, you should make an extra effort to turn it into a veritable sanctuary. This means keeping all forms of technology and reminders of work out of it (these will only serve as reminders of your obligations), along with warm lighting (bright lighting has a higher resonance, which will prevent you from shutting down and relaxing), soft fabrics, and neutral colour tones.

If you have a storage bed, it’s not recommended to place items like books or shoes underneath it, as these are considered to have “active” energy, and will therefore prevent restful slumber. To promote air flow, make sure that you have equal space on either side of the bed, and that the mattress isn’t directly touching the floor.

It’s also beneficial to get into the habit of making your bed every morning and thanking it for supporting you all night (something Marie Kondo is famous for incorporating in her organisation style), as this will create an atmosphere of gratefulness.

INCORPORATE NATURE’S ELEMENTS & COLOURS

The elements of wind and water that literally make up the term feng shui are the same ones that make up the air we breathe and the water our bodies are composed of. We are meant to understand that we are a part of nature, and should strive to be in harmony with it. By bringing the outdoor indoors, you’ll be creating a calming sense of peace, serenity, and a reminder to remain grounded, all while reducing anger and anxiety.

Incorporate all five elements (wood, water, earth, fire, and metal) into your décor with wooden furniture, candles, and living plants (which have their own chi), though if you’re not great with the latter, opt for higher quality artificial ones. Keep your windows clean to let as much natural light into your home as possible, make sure surfaces are regularly dusted to prevent an atmosphere of stagnation, and create a vertical aesthetic with floor-to-ceiling bookcases and tall plants to help give a sense of growth and expansion.

MIRRORS REFLECT ENERGY

In feng shui, there’s something known as “command positions”. Essentially, certain pieces of furniture should be placed in a dominant area of the room, such as beds in bedrooms and desks in home offices. With regards to the former, a bed should be placed in such a position that will have a view of the entrance, called the “mouth of chi”, but without being directly in line with it.

Preferably, the bed should be diagonal to the door, or, if not feasible, a mirror can be hung in such a way as to provide a reflection of it. Mirrors are great reflectors of energy, so place them in areas where you want to increase energy flow.

OPEN YOUR DOORS

How else is energy going to get in? Leaving your doors and windows open will help new, positive energy to flow in and clear all the old, negative energy out, not to mention provide cleaner air. Want to attract more prosperity? Place a red flowering plant (or red colours in general) near the front door to invite good fortune and luck!

While soft lighting is good for a room you rest in, use brighter lights in hallways. Corridors create an interconnecting route throughout the entire house, so the higher energy resonance from bright lights will ensure a stronger connection. The higher wattage is said to be good for keeping veins and arteries clean and unblocked, too.

While it’s important to keep doorways free of obstacles, especially the front door, be careful with runaway chi. Getting rid of clutter doesn’t mean having an entirely empty house. Pieces of furniture and decorative objects placed in a meandering pattern is a good way of impeding energy entering the house and preventing it from simply escaping.

TRAVELLING IN 2021: FIVE SIMPLE REASONS TO NURTURE YOUR WANDERLUST

By Books & Reading, Fashion, Life & Style, Travel No Comments

Wanderlust: a strong longing for or impulse toward wandering; the wish to travel far away and to many different places.

Travellers might have even more of a reason to want to hop on a plane this year and go off into a foreign wilderness after recent pandemic-related events. We can already imagine their fingers itching to press that ‘Book Tickets’ tab online and await the sweet escape.

If you were a lover of travel before everything got locked down, you’re probably dying to experience the local scenery of a country other than your own. To get you in the adventurous mood, here are some of the benefits of travelling!

IT’S BOTH PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY HEALTHY

Of course, when you’re travelling, you might be doing a lot of walking, perhaps far more than when you’re stuck in your own country at an office job. It’ll be tiring exercise, but worth it for your physical health in the long term, as studies have shown that travel can help reduce things like heart disease. Some fresh air and sunshine will also do a world of good.

This will have positive effects on your mental health, too. Taking a break from your life and escaping for a while is known to reduce anxiety, stress, and depression, and can help you disconnect, relax, rejuvenate, and reset from daily life.

SOME THINGS CAN ONLY BE EXPERIENCED IN PERSON

Admittedly, the internet has helped to make a lot of things easily available for everyone around the globe; we can share anything in a matter of seconds through social media. But that’s no alternative to actually being there. Sure, learning things through books and videos has its advantages, and you can certainly build up quite a database of information like that, but seeing a work of art in a museum as opposed to a book, or getting to walk through forests and mountains rather than just seeing them in documentaries, are vastly different experiences.

IT’LL MAKE YOU MORE INTELLIGENT

As with the previous point, there are certain things you’ll only be able to learn about and absorb in person. When it comes to a culture that’s different to yours, experiencing it first-hand can be infinitely mind-opening. You’ll be exposed to totally new things that’ll broaden your perspective on life. By building a tolerance for uncertainty, you’ll learn to just go with the flow and treat every day like it’s your last, living completely in the present.

As you can imagine, this will help you transform into a more interesting person with loads of great stories to tell about the delicacies you’ve tried, the languages you’ve learned, and the solid friendships and relationships you’ve built along the way. All of this will contribute to making your senses sharper and your mind more creative, and will also look attractive on a resume!

TRAVELLING ALONE WILL BUILD CONFIDENCE

Apart from the obvious advantages of travelling alone, such as getting to follow your own route and schedule, and avoiding pesky arguments about where to go and what to see, more than anything, it’ll help you learn to be more comfortable with your own company. This is something that an over-stimulated technological society has trouble with; we can rarely ever shut down and ‘do nothing’, away from mobiles and other such activities.

Learning to be alone and relying totally on yourself can be an extremely liberating feeling, providing a great, though often scary, opportunity for introspection and reflection. Getting out of your comfort zone can be difficult, but the rewards are endless.

IN THE END, YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO HAVE FUN!

Perhaps the whole point of travelling is that you’re opening yourself up to the world and saying: “Give me everything you’ve got.” While this isn’t to say that travelling is for everyone, human beings are, to a certain extent, naturally nomadic people, historically moving from one geographical region to another for any number of reasons.

Back in the 1800s, the Grand Tour was all the rage with the upper classes, the final stage in an adolescent’s worldly education. Nowadays, the relatively cheaper cost of tickets for any mode of transportation means that anyone can hop on a plane, boat, train, or car in a heartbeat and be in a completely different time-zone in a few hours. If nothing else, it’s a celebration of the wonderful advancements in technology that allow for all this to happen!

And, at the end of the day, seeing how others live their lives can also help you cherish your own more. Nothing will make you appreciate coming back to your home sweet home than a long trip away from it all.

CREATE YOUR OWN LITTLE READING NOOK

By Books & Reading, Home Comforts, Life & Style No Comments

If you’re a bibliophile like the rest of us here at We Are Not a Shop, you’ve probably always dreamed of constructing your very own personal reading nook from an early age, a place decorated with all your favourite things where you can escape from the world and into the pages of some ancient tome or riveting paperback.

We’re here to tell you that it’s actually not that difficult to create one! Here are some things to take into consideration when transforming your space into a bookworm’s fantasy.

COMFORTABLE SEATING

While it’s great that some individuals find it more productive to stand while doing their reading and/or writing (Ernest Hemingway famously typed at a makeshift standing desk), some of us prefer to sit comfortably snug in a cosy armchair or bed wrapped in blankets and surrounded by plump cushions. You could even incorporate a hammock and be gently swayed as you relax. Make sure it’s not too comfortable, though, or you might fall asleep!

SOFT LIGHTING

You’re going to want some form of lighting in your habitat so as not to strain your eyes while reading. At the same time, however, garish lighting could completely destroy the soothing ambience you worked so hard to create. Opting for warm as opposed to bright lighting will allow you to read in perfect comfort. Twinkle lights can add an element of magic to any surrounding, while trusty candles create an air of sophistication (as well as a pleasant aroma if you opt for fragrant ones).

REFRESHMENT STATION

Who said you can’t have a beverage handy when you’re halfway through a good book? A quaint decorative table is all you’ll need to construct a small refreshment station for tea, coffee, or whatever else you fancy. Place all of your drinking accoutrements on it and make a statement at the same time! It’s always a pleasure to have something prepared in case a guest drops by.

BREATHE SOME FRESH AIR

In a world choking with pollution of all kinds, it’s important to make your living space a haven of health. It’s best if your reading nook is in a room that has at least one window (which you can decorate with some curtains and stunning cords) so that you aren’t constantly breathing the same air. Throw that window open and add a scent diffuser to clean all that negative energy out. It’s also a great idea to get some air-cleaning plants, though if you’re not the best with greenery, some artificial flowers could go a long way in making your reading room look like an enchanted outdoor hideaway.

NO TECHNOLOGY

It’s becoming a well-known scientific fact that we shouldn’t keep any technological items in areas where we rest. It’s suggested that we should stop looking at television screens and mobiles about an hour before going to bed, as the kind of light these devices emit can affect our REM cycles, preventing us from falling into a truly beneficial sleep.

What’s more, it’s said that such devices emit ultrasonic waves that can further prevent our brains from shutting down after a long day’s work, so avoid having them in close proximity. In the case of your reading nook, you probably won’t get much reading done if you’re constantly checking your phone every time a new notification comes in! Smuggle them away out of sight in a small container somewhere.

INCORPORATE YOUR OWN PERSONALITY

Style is subjective, and at the end of the day, it’s your reading nook, so it makes sense that you should decorate it according to how you see fit and with those things you have a close attachment to. Store your personal curios in a glass cabinet for visitors to marvel at, and create a gallery wall lined with beautiful art that speaks to the artist in you.

BOOKS, BOOKS, AND MORE BOOKS

Of course, what kind of reading nook would it be without material to read? If you’re an avid book collector, put up some ornate shelves that’ll speak for themselves as objects of beauty and gradually add your favourite books to your personal library. Depending on whether you’re the sort of person to loan books or hoard them all for yourself (we’re not judging!), a wall of books makes for a very sophisticated look and makes the owner seem especially cultured.

MONIQUE CHAMBERS, BRITISH-MALTESE SMALL BUSINESS OWNER & WRITER

By Books & Reading, Food for thought, Life & Style No Comments

Monique Chambers is a British-Maltese small business owner and writer. She has worked extensively in PR, specifically in the food and leisure sphere. This week, she’s sharing some of her favourite We Are Not a Shop picks.

Monique, we’re thrilled to have you with us! Could you tell us about your We Are Not a Shop selections?

For starters, I was instantly drawn to this card. There’s really nothing better than receiving a thoughtful (and humorous!) card in the post, is there? I’m old-fashioned that way.

For that friend that gets your humour.

The Edible Flower Garden by Kathy Brown also caught my eye. It’s all about edible flowers. I’ve actually cooked with flowers for several years: they look great and elevate any dish. Malta has a surprising number of edible flowers, so there are loads to choose from. If you love hosting dinner parties, that’s a little tip to have up your sleeve. You’re welcome!

Jazz up any meal with some edible flowers!

And how gorgeous is Le Petit Echo de la Mode? It’s a magazine from the 1940s, which is an era I’m enamoured with. I could get totally lost in it: the style, language, and just the general innocence of it all is so magical to me. So, this was an obvious choice.

Great picks! So, what do you like most about We Are Not a Shop?

It’s super quirky and unique! It’s the perfect place to shop if you’re looking to put some extra thought into your gifts. If someone buys you something from We Are Not a Shop, you know they really care.

This CD containing the best music from the 40s would make a great gift for someone, or even for yourself!

Of course, I also love that it supports local charities. It’s a two-for-one deal because you’re buying something pretty and doing good at the same time.

Eco-friendly pencils that you can turn into a plant when you’re done? We’re sold!

Did you choose any of your items with someone specific in mind?

Nope, they’re all for me! Seriously…

Although, I’d probably buy this Birthday Yearbook for a friend with a newborn – something handy to keep track of those important milestones.

The perfect way to keep track of all those important dates.

Then, I would potentially share these handmade Cookies & Cream chocolatesif I were feeling generous.

Get your hands on them before they’re gone!

I could also see myself making a gift for a friend from one of the articles in Le Petit Echo de la Mode. Something funky, homemade, and vintage-inspired! And I’d give my friend Dierdre the Runners gift card. She loves a card almost as much as I do.

Keep them all for yourself, Monique – we won’t judge you for it! Finally, do you have an absolute favourite item, and could you tell us why you love it so much?

The Le Petit Echo de la Mode magazine, for sure! I love anything vintage, specifically if it relates to the 1940s. I wish I could have been around in that era, so this is right up my street. I’m really into sewing too, so the pages on vintage sewing patterns are very me.

From the hands of tradition, a Gozitan lace classic.

We had a feeling you’d go for that one. It’s been great talking to you, Monique. Happy sewing!

BECKY GERA, WRITER & MUM-OF-TWO

By Family, Home Comforts, Life & Style No Comments

Writer and mum-of-two Becky Gera has a great sense of humour and an appreciation for the smaller, more sentimental things in life. Today, she’s chatting to us about her favourite We Are Not a Shop picks!

Becky, we’re so happy to have you with us! Could you tell us about some of your favourite We Are Not a Shop items?

For starters, I absolutely love all the greeting cards at We Are Not a Shop. I’m really into snail mail and have recently been sending cards to a friend of mine who lives in Ireland. We don’t know when we’ll get to see each other again so it’s a nice way to connect and cheer each other up on a rainy day. I always crack a smile when one of her funny cards pops through their letter box, so I make it my mission to return the good feelings.

As for my choices on the site, this one is particularly hilarious – the humour is right up my street.

“I do often mistake CrossFit for croissants…oops.”

I also love this Table-Talk game because I’m a sucker for a good conversation starter. Some of the questions are quite deep so it would make for some very entertaining dinner party chat!

A dinner party must-have!

Oh, and this tea towel is great fun too. It’s the small details that can really make or break a space, so having a fun tea towel to dress up your kitchen can really transform it (and add a touch of personality, too).

A bit of wit for your kitchen top…

Great choices, Becky! Can you tell us what you like most about the We Are Not a Shop concept?

I love that there is such an eclectic mix of items on the website. It feels a bit like the ‘cave of wonders’ in Aladdin – you never know what you’re going to find. Plus the fact you’re buying things for a good cause makes it even better.

I’ve already started recommending We Are Not a Shop to my friends and will definitely keep it in mind when I’m looking to do a spot of shopping myself.

A pretty pen and pouch set for your writer friends!

Did you pick any of your items for anyone in particular?

I had a few people in mind, yes. I’d probably buy this shopping bag for my mum – you can never have too many shopping bags, eh? I also think my girls would really enjoy these strawscolouring pencils, and this adorable birthday book. And I’d have to gift the Table-Talk cards to a friend of mine who always asks the most thought-provoking questions – only fitting.

Perfect to keep your kids entertained!
Got to keep track of those dates!

Finally, is there anything you would most like to receive as a gift yourself?

This card. As I mentioned, snail mail is kind of my thing and I’d be super thrilled to receive it – it would totally make my day! People don’t send cards much anymore, which is such a pity because I think it’s such a great way to show somebody you’re thinking of them.

Some of the items selected by Becky, including a natural Hessian bag with navy binding. Cool, classic, and convenient.

We couldn’t agree more. Thanks so much for joining us today Becky, and we hope your friend enjoys her next card!

Carla Grima, Designer & Creator Of Carla Grima Atelier

By Family, Life & Style No Comments

“It’s a great place to discover gifts for loved ones (and yourself, of course!). Plus, all the proceeds go to charity, so you’re always shopping safe in the knowledge that your money is going to a good cause.”

Carla Grima is the designer behind local fashion studio, Carla Grima Atelier. Her gorgeous collections are heavily inspired by nature, organic silhouettes, and the colours of the Mediterranean – check them out right here! Today, however, she’s taking a break from her design duties to sit down with us and talk all things We Are Not A Shop and why it is the perfect place to buy unusual gifts online. Find out what she selected from our online store, below.

Carla, we’re so glad you could join us today. Can you tell us what inspired your We Are Not A Shop selections?

Certainly! To kick things off, I selected this book because it reminded me of some research I had done on stained glass and its many forms. It’s an ideal coffee table piece, too.

Then, I just love looking at vintage interior design and/or fashion magazines, so I was excited to see that you had this magazine on your website! These kinds of publications are pretty hard to come by in Malta, so I was pleasantly surprised to find one.

What was your most surprising selection?

That would have to be the oyster shell salt cellar. It’s a very simple piece, but I just love the statement it would make at a dinner table. I’ve never seen anything quite like it in person.

How would you describe We Are Not A Shop to someone who doesn’t know about it?

As an online platform that lists a wide range of rare vintage pieces and is also very user friendly.

Did you have a favourite section of the website?

The book section was probably my favourite because you can really find anything on there! From magazines to illustrated books, coffee table publications, and more. I also thought that section on the website was especially easy to navigate.

What do you like about the We Are Not A Shop concept?

I love how unique all the items are – nothing is mass-produced. It’s a great place to discover gifts for loved ones (and yourself, of course). Plus, all the proceeds go to charity, so you’re always shopping safe in the knowledge that your money is going towards a good cause.

Would you recommend We Are Not A Shop to a friend?

Oh, I’ll definitely be recommending it to my friends and family!

The next book I selected was ‘British Designers at Home’. I think British home décor is really exciting and eclectic – it definitely enjoys a bold pattern and colour combination. I’ll probably flick through its pages and add some of the images to one of my many mood boards; that’s one of my favourite ways to source inspiration for my work.

As for this book, I gravitated towards it because I am a big fan of botanical illustrations. I love copying to study them, recreating them, and, ultimately, painting them. This book also does a great job of explaining the illustrations to younger children. I thought it would be a good idea to go through it with my daughter, Olivia, and teach her about different flowers and foliage.

Then, I selected this belt buckle because of its lovely art nouveau design. I can already picture it on a bold velvet ribbon, styled on silk caftan. It’s just the perfect statement piece to transform any basic silhouette.

I also picked this anklet because, frankly, you will always find me wearing one in the summer months. For me, they’re reminiscent of lazy, sunny days. This one feels particularly elegant, though, which is why I selected it. It’ll nicely transition from day to night.

This evening purse is a total find, too. There are plenty of similar pieces on the website, but this one has so much detail, even on the inside, that I just had to have it. It would be perfect for a wedding or other formal occasion.

The last piece I selected might actually be my favourite. I went for this oyster shell salt cellar for two reasons; firstly, because I’m always drawn to items made from natural materials, and, secondly, because I love entertaining, and I can imagine using this to decorate my table at my next dinner party.

KATIA CAMILLERI, INTERIOR DESIGN CONTENT CREATOR & HOME DÉCOR FIEND

By Collecting, Life & Style, Uncategorised No Comments

This week, interior design content creator and home décor fiend Katia Camilleri (@houseteneighteen) is sitting down with us to discuss her top We Are Not a Shop picks.

Hey Katia, thanks for joining us! Can you tell us what We Are Not a Shop items caught your eye today?

Since my Instagram page revolves around interior design, I was on the hunt for some quirky trinkets and functional pieces for the home. So when I saw the items in the Collectors’ Corner, I was sold!

I just love the whole ‘old meets new’ aesthetic and can totally imagine decorating my own house with a number of We Are Not a Shop pieces.

Add some Greek goddess glam with this white alabaster and cast marble bust of the Greek goddess Artemis. Also featured is a velvet cushion with roses and a snail. Handmade, vintage, and just plain gorgeous.

We couldn’t agree more. So, what do you like most about the We Are Not a Shop concept?

I love how unique it is – I actually can’t think of any other shops on the island with a similar set-up, and that’s great!

Also, I really enjoy finding vintage items and giving them a new lease of life. We Are Not a Shop is the perfect place to discover them. The fact that all sale proceeds go to charity just makes it all the more appealing.

Have you selected any of your items with someone specific in mind?

Yes, actually! My mother loves jewellery and vintage pieces (probably even more than I do), so I would definitely gift her any of the items I selected today. Similarly, my grandpa is really into antiques (you can see where I get it from), so I would happily surprise him with this cigarette dispenser or even this classic trinket box.

Take a step back in time with this vintage cigarette holder.
No smoke, no problem. This hand-carved soap stone ashtray is the perfect ornament for your coffee table (even if you don’t actually need it).
A teeny-tiny trinket.

Lastly, are there any items you would want to receive as a gift, and why?

It would have to be this gorgeous teacup set. They’re super original and I can already picture them on display in my dining room – a little vintage touch!

A spot of art deco décor never hurt anyone. Katia admires one of a vintage set of art deco silver-plated tea glass holders. Also featured in the background is a Spanish recycled glass bottle for your next dinner fiesta.

These books are also great – entertaining and decorative. You can use them as coffee table books or simply stack them to create a stylish interior feature.

19th-century botanical literature for your bookcase.

Finally, these handles would be ideal for an upcycled chest of drawers in a nursery. I’ve got it all planned out!

Add a vintage touch to your latest interior design project with these aged elephant handles.
We might see these child’s Noah’s ark bookends in Katia’s future upcycled nursery.

We love these handy design tips, Katia, and we can’t wait to see how you incorporate your We Are Not a Shop picks into your home!

Talk about a statement piece! This OKA Ornamenta-range faux antler magnifying glass is a great example of Katia’s preferred ‘old meets new’ aesthetic.

LUKE MICALLEF, ANTIQUE COLLECTOR & VINTAGE AFICIONADO

By Collecting, Life & Style No Comments

Antique collector and vintage aficionado, Luke Micallef, can’t resist a rare find with a bit of personality. Today, he’s talking us through some of his top We Are Not a Shop picks.

Hey Luke! We hear you’re quite the We Are Not a Shop fan – thanks for the support! Why did you choose these particular items today?

As I was going through the WANAS website, this vintage Napier Chinoiserie-inspired charm bracelet instantly caught my eye. It’s made out of little lanterns – what’s not to love? It’s stunning – a definite collector’s item.

Surprise a loved one with this unique piece.

I also picked this gorgeous malachite art deco Czechoslovakian vase. They just don’t make them like this anymore!

Another item for your mantel piece. The more the merrier, right?

Finally, I’m so glad I selected this signed numbered Graham Rust print. Seeing it in person, you could easily mistake it for an actual drawing, which makes it the perfect addition to any feature wall.

“It looks just like a real painting!”
This collection of six F. Edward Hulme botanical prints from 1890 would make a great addition to a feature wall.

Great choices! Could you tell us what you love most about We Are Not a Shop in general?

Well, for starters, all the items at We Are Not a Shop clearly have a story behind them, and that makes them extra special. I actually came across the shop by accident but quickly found myself browsing the website, getting attached to some pieces and thinking: “I will not rest until I have these!” I also love the fact that all the proceeds go to a good cause, so you don’t have to feel guilty about spending that little bit extra.

Pretty perfection. Treat yourself to this vintage silver brooch with a light aquamarine stone and paste surround.
The Lachrymatory Teardrop Glass Scent Bottle (left) and Tibetan Jade Snuff Bottle (right) are beautiful pieces all on their own.

Who would you recommend We Are Not a Shop to?

We Are Not a Shop is ideal for anyone looking for a gift – there’s something for everyone. In fact, I was on the lookout for a present for my mother because she’s a collector too.

Quirky, cute, and oh-so-dainty, these vintage small unmatched dishes would make a thoughtful gift.

I have to admit, shopping here can be a bit of a struggle because I can never decide which piece to buy first! I’m always conflicted between wanting to buy things for myself and gifting them to friends and family. But, of course, there are worse problems for a collector to have!

Spice up your tux with these interesting raw amethyst cufflinks.

On that note, is there a particular item you would you most want to receive as a gift from We Are Not a Shop?

Ah, that’s really difficult because there are so many! Everything on this site has that little ‘something’ that I love. I’d probably have to say this French blue seltzer soda syphon, since I’ve recently started a little glass collection for myself (so it’s only fitting).

A new item for your mantel piece.

Thanks Luke! We love that you’re such a fan of the site – thanks so much for getting the word out there. Happy shopping!

Popcorn and a DVD, anyone? Luke chose one of his favourite films, ‘Miss Potter’ (2006), from We Are Not a Shop‘s aesthetic film range.

DECORATE YOUR HOME FOR SPRING & SUMMER WITH THESE 24 AFFORDABLE ITEMS

By Home Comforts, Life & Style No Comments

Are you redecorating on a budget and wish to bring in a Spring into Summer aesthetic into your home this year? Take a look at some of the beautiful items We Are Not A Shop has to offer! We’ve only chosen affordable things, but ones that still possess an element of grandeur and airy freshness.

Click on the links to be taken to our website where you’ll be able to bring these items into your home in preparation for warmer months!

HOME ACCESSORIES

Looking for home accessories to freshen up your home? Take a look at some of our favourite items!

There’s something ancient-looking about this pomegranate-shaped box made from zamac (€3.25). The website also has a silver version, but we liked this gold one because it fulfills all our mythological interests. Could this be the famed fruit that doomed Persephone to half a year of darkness?

Add some spring flair to your walls with these decorative tin plates. The Goodge Violet Tin Plate (€7.15) features a violet design, taken from a plate commissioned by the French state at the end of the Franco-Prussian war after Napoleon III was deposed. Couple it with the pinks, golds, greens, and blues of the Gold Butterfly Tin Plate (€7.15), featuring a reproduction design of a saucer made by the Chelsea Porcelain Factory in London between 1758 and 1769.

This recycled glass water bottle with stopper (€14.25) would be perfect for the environmentally conscious, but can equally double as a vase or just a decorative item in general. This kind of lustrous glass has become quite collectible. You just don’t get that kind of sheen in glass bottles anymore.

This simple yet elegant glass vase from AD Trends (€22.95) is a staple for any home. If you’re not in the habit of bringing real flowers indoors for environmental or allergy-related reasons, We Are Not A Shop stocks a remarkably lifelike range of artificial flowers that are admittedly quite lovely to look at. You won’t have to worry about flower maintenance, and you can have them all year round!

To continue with our gold aesthetic, this pair of vintage Italian brass hook sconces with ceramic roses (€27.15) are, in our opinion, stunning. Even if you don’t end up fixing them to the wall for practical use, they’re just so pretty to look at that you can leave them standing on a shelf in a corner.

SOAPS & FRAGRANCES

Yes, we’ve provided for your interior decorating needs, but that only covers one of your sense – sight. What about scent? There’s a whole array of soaps and fragrances available at We Are Not A Shop that will really make your home a pleasant place to relax in.

This selection of Max Benjamin Room Diffusers would make the perfect gift, both for others and for yourself. Believe us when we say they’re very effective in changing the ambience of a room. The fragrances you can choose from include Dodici (€35.00), containing oils of rosemary, Sicilian lemon, marjoram, and Tuscan lavender; White Lilies (€35.00); Rose & Champagne (€35.00), containing top notes of pink grapefruit and blackcurrant mixed with pomegranate and hyacinth; and the stunning Dolce Sole (€38.00), inspired by the scents of the Italian coastline, combining bergamot, tangerine, rosemary, jasmine, vetiver, and musk. While the prices might seem steep, keep in mind that these diffusers last for around four months!

If you want to keep the fragrance aspect and also have the added benefit of natural lighting, then these Crabtree & Evelyn Aromathology Candles are for you. The Relaxation candle (€13.25) contains lavender, tangerine, and clary sage, while the Romance candle (€13.25) contains patchouli and rose.

Bring glorious scents into your bathroom as well with this 500ML Hand Wash and Moisturiser from the Aspire Collection designed in aid of Save the Valletta Skyline Appeal by local perfumer Stephen Cordina (€15.74). Your hands will be both moisturised after use and lightly scented with hints of jasmine, oud, and grapefruit.

Don’t stop there! Your clothing needs to be taken care of, too. This box containing six Laura Ashley Drawer Liners (€8.75), scented with citrus blossom and nectarine, are the perfect way of keeping your clothes smelling fresh and like you’ve just been frolicking in nature.

CUSHIONS

Truth be told, we’re rather obsessed with cushions. But when it comes to changing from darker, colder seasons into lighter, warmer ones, the choice of colours and fabrics can make all the difference. You’re bound to find something to your liking among We Are Not A Shop’s impressive range of cushions and cushion covers. Luckily, in the case of cushion covers, the shop also stocks feather or polyester cushion inserts of various sizes.

You can’t really go wrong with this minimal set of Ragged Rose Bobby and Arabella scatter cushions, each with adorable pom pom trims, and complete with their own polyester inserts. Collect them all in delicious summer gold (€25.00), delicate soft pink (€22.50), savoury burnt orange (€25.00), and magical lovat green (€25.00).

Our personal favourites are these hand-painted cushions, one with bright, bold pink and yellow colours (€25.00), and the other with a more multi-coloured array of blue, green, yellow, and pink (€25.00). They’re made from canvas, so they’re waterproof and therefore ideal for outdoor use.

HOME OFFICE

Spring and summer aesthetics don’t have to be relegated just to living spaces. Bring some colour to the areas in your home where you work, with a Notelet Block showing bluebirds, containing 800 blank sheets of paper from sustainable forests (€6.50), a flowery pink Mini Home Office (€8.50), and a Handmade Mulberry Paper Notebook (€13.75) from the Karen tribe in Thailand.

GARDENING

If you’re looking to get your hands dirty in your journey towards becoming a gardening expert, you’ll need the proper tools for the job. Try out this Four Seasons Planter Set (€24.50), containing a natural wooden-handled trowel and fork, as well as a pretty flowered kneeling pad.
