INDOOR SUMMER ENTERTAINING DONE RIGHT

By Entertaining, Food for thought, Home Comforts No Comments

“I have only to break into the tightness of a strawberry, and I see summer – its dust and lowering skies.” – Toni Morrison

Is it just us, or did this winter feel particularly long? We’re grateful for the occasional breeze coming through our windows, longer days, and blissful siestas, especially before moving into some essential swimming and late-night parties in the middle of our Mediterranean summer.

Are you getting ready to start hosting for the summer? If you don’t have the opportunity to lounge in a shady garden, or look at the stars on a cool rooftop with some friends, indoor dining can be just as relaxing. Take a look at what we recommend.

SET THE SCENE

If you’d rather enjoy the benefits of a fan or air-conditioner, you can always bring the outdoors indoors with some artificial flowers. Faux flowers are currently enjoying a resurgence – if you’re not one for gardening, investing in some high-quality artificial flowers could be the answer to all your problems. No pesky watering or pruning will be necessary with the marvellous colours provided by these large pink and white orchids, complete with ferns and rootballs for added authenticity.

BRING IN THE BEVERAGES

Slake your thirst with some refreshing drinks in style – lemonade or Prosecco, perhaps! These eye-catching vintage goblets in both deep blue and cobalt blue, circa 1970s, will catch the light and make you feel like some sort of Grecian deity, no doubt about it.

CULTIVATE SOME COLOUR

Continue your floral theme by decorating your table with some colourful napkins. These white linen napkins are embellished with vibrant pink peonies, emerald green leaves, and finished with an emerald green border. Now that your table will look like it’s been strewn with real greenery, we really feel like curling up to read A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Care to join?

For more informal dining, bring the brilliance of the sun to the table with these yellow and white checked gingham napkins. They’re fun and provide a less serious picnic-like aesthetic.

CHANGE YOUR CROCKERY

Well, your guests will need to eat off of something, and we’ve got you covered. Here’s a complete vintage stoneware lunch/dinner service set, decorated in blue and white with gold trim. The fact that they’re antique only adds to their quality. In fact, we’d argue that such a set gets better with age by absorbing history. Think of how an item such as this, which can easily become a family heirloom, has brought so many people together to share stories, and will continue to do so well into the future.

Round off the collection with a dainty contemporary butter dome, bringing together a variety of mediums in glass, silver-, and gold-coloured metal.

THE CROWNING GLORY

We’d normally think of a table centrepiece as being something with no functional purpose, such as a bouquet of flowers or an ice sculpture. But who’s to say something can’t be both beautiful and useful? Complete the whole look with a crowning feature: a Mexican silver jug with a green mosaicked malachite parrot handle. To be completely honest with you, we’re still in awe of this piece.

This 2-litre jug is handcrafted from recycled hand-beaten copper and finished in Mexican silver by artisans in central Mexico. The semi-precious malachite bird adorning the jug is truly something to be marvelled at. You’ll certainly get asked a few questions about this addition to your table – a real conversation starter!

LORINDA MAMO, LIFESTYLE BLOGGER, GRAPHIC DESIGNER & INTERDISCIPLINARY CREATIVE

By Fashion, Home Comforts, Life & Style No Comments

If you’re looking for original and thoughtful gift ideas, We Are Not A Shop is the online store for you. Particularly if you’re shopping for those tricky people who just seem to have everything – there’s bound to be something for them, too!

You may recognise Lorinda Mamo from her popular Instagram account @abirdwithafrenchfry, where she documents life with her son, Henry – a charismatic young man and survivor of PBS (prune belly syndrome), currently living with CKD (chronic kidney disease).

But Lorinda is also a graphic designer, blogger, interdisciplinary creative, and founder of HappyPlayCo – what can’t she do, right? Today, however, she’s taking a short break from her many jobs to sit down with us to discuss all things We Are Not A Shop. Find out what she had to say below.

Lorinda, we’re so glad you could join us. Could you talk us through some of the items you selected today?

Thank you for inviting me, I’m very excited to be here.

To kick things off, this book really caught my eye. I love homemade things, so this is right up my street. I wanted to crack open the pages as soon as I saw the cover.

Then, I picked this mystery puzzle box, because, frankly, I had seen it before and couldn’t stop thinking about it. It’s full of little details and intricacies which I find so magical.

This ring is beautiful, too. I don’t know what to say other than that it’s gorgeous. I’m really into my statement rings and this one finds a perfect balance between boldness and classic elegance.

I also must confess that I am big on stationery. I’ve been collecting stationery items since I was a young girl, so, when I saw these fun pencils, I simply had to have them. I’m a fan of their colour and the quotes written on them. From a graphic design perspective, I think the font is great, too. They’ll definitely bring a smile to my face the next time I’m writing out a to-do list.

I also picked this super elegant evening bag from your jewellery and fashion section. I recently had a gala event and had to scour most of Malta looking for a black evening bag – to no avail! This would have been perfect, though. It’s such a timeless piece which I can see myself wearing over and over again. I always prefer classic clothes to very trendy pieces, and this fits the bill.

Then, this music box instantly reminded me of my son, which is why I gravitated toward it. I sing this song to him myself, so it’s a bit sentimental I suppose.

Now, I’m admittedly not a huge makeup person, but this vintage powder and lipstick set was too gorgeous to leave behind. I mean, look at that impeccable mother of pearl detail.

My last item was this letter sealing set, which screamed out to me because of my love of stationery (which we’ve already established). It’s just fantastic. Why don’t people still seal letters this way?

Those are some great pieces, Lorinda. Now, what was your most surprising selection?

The mystery box! I’m still not entirely sure what’s inside it, so it’ll definitely be a surprise when I figure it out.

Did you have a favourite section of the website?

The curiosities section. There are just so many unique pieces I’d never seen before.

What do you like about the We Are Not A Shop concept?

Well, for starters, I love how well-curated the website is and the wide selection of items available. There really is something for everyone. There’s everything from quirky vintage greeting cards to exquisite jewellery, and even one-of-a-kind kids’ toys.

How would you describe We Are Not A Shop to someone who doesn’t know about it?

As a unique online concept where all the proceeds go to charity.

Buying from We Are Not A Shop is also very exciting because you know that all the items are one-of-a-kind. So, if you’re not quick to snatch something up, someone else might grab it before you!

Would you recommend We Are Not A Shop to a friend?

Absolutely. If you’re looking for original and thoughtful gift ideas, We Are Not A Shop is the online store for you. Particularly if you’re shopping for those tricky people who just seem to have everything – there’s bound to be something for them, too.

ANDREW BORG WIRTH, ARCHITECT & CURATOR WITH AN INTERDISCIPLINARY PRACTICE

By Books & Reading, Collecting, Home Comforts No Comments

“Stuck for gift ideas? Give We Are Not A Shop a look!”

Andrew Borg Wirth is an architect and curator with an interdisciplinary practice. He has worked in everything from theatre to the visual arts, and is a co- founder and designer of bloc collective. Today, he’s sitting down with us to talk about the items he loves most in the We Are Not A Shop collection.

Andrew, we’re so glad you could join us today! Let’s jump right in. Can you tell us what inspired your We Are Not A Shop picks?

Well, I’m really into antiques, jewellery, and books, so I think that’s reflected in everything I’ve chosen.

Firstly, this copy of Valletta Lost City (Volume One) speaks to me because I, admittedly, have a bit of an obsession with nostalgia. It’s such incredible book. I’d personally love to receive it as a gift (hint, hint), or give it to any one of my friends. This is the second Volume of the book, so I’ll be adding it to my pre-existing collection.

Then, I went for this copy of ‘More Letters of Note’ because it’s such a curious little book that allows us to really investigate the lives of others. Letters are so personal, it’s really quite a privilege to be able to read such intimate words intended for someone else.

I then picked this custom-made jewellery box because, frankly, I don’t believe you can ever have enough jewellery boxes. It’s also made of burl wood, which is such a gorgeous material, it’s basically an art piece in itself. Knowing that it was custom-made makes it all the more special. Not enough in this world is personal, so I like to invest in things that are.

Not that I need any more cushions, but I chose this one because it’s great fun. I love including chinoiserie, so I thought this was a bit curious.

My penultimate object is this salt seller set, which I selected because I’m at that chapter in life when everyone around me is getting married, and I think that it would make a great wedding gift. You can probably find several soulless equivalents to a piece like this elsewhere, but you can never replace such original detailed handwork and craftsmanship.

Finally, this antique marriage globe is just incredible – it’s everything I want and more. I feel like this is what the inside of my mind looks like…

Do you have a favourite section of the website?

I did love the jewellery section, but I’m going to have to go with the Collector’s Corner.

What do you like about the We Are Not A Shop concept?

I like that it’s so unpredictable – you never know what you’re going to find.

It’s also got a very clear and admirable ethos. When you purchase something from We Are Not A Shop, you’re buying into a philosophy, not just a product; and that’s a very special thing.

How would you describe We Are Not A Shop to someone who doesn’t know about it?

As a really good way to spend a Sunday afternoon, and the perfect place to find a special gift. Really, if you’re ever stuck for gift ideas, definitely give We Are Not A Shop a look!

Would you recommend We Are Not A Shop to a friend?

I most definitely would, and already have! It’s clearly got a great message, lovely people working behind the scenes, and beautiful items to be inspired by. Why wouldn’t I?

HOW TO MAKE A PROPER CUP OF TEA

By Food for thought, Home Comforts, Life & Style No Comments

“All true tea lovers not only like their tea strong, but like it a little stronger with each year that passes.” – George Orwell, “A Nice Cup of Tea” (1946)

Tea! And all the wonderful thoughts that come to mind when we say that word. There was a time when tea was quite rare to get your hands on, making it very expensive to purchase. As a result, inviting someone over to tea became a fashion statement, along with all the attachments of finery and etiquette associated with it.

Thankfully for us tea enthusiasts, tea is now readily available all around the world. But that doesn’t mean elegant tea parties are no longer popular. In fact, we’re witnessing quite a craze in tea party revivals, and we’re so excited to be a part of it!

Without further ado, here are all the things to keep in mind when making a cup of tea the right way.

INVEST IN A QUALITY TEA SET

If you’re looking to invest in a quality tea set, there really are only a few materials you should consider: silver, porcelain, and glass. All three retain heat extremely well, are aesthetically attractive, and won’t taint the flavour of the tea. Glass tea sets are great for herbal teas like green tea as you’ll get to appreciate the wonderful colour of the tea.

Silver and porcelain are both beautiful, traditional materials. When kept in proper condition through polishing, they only get better with age. As a metal, silver will retain heat like no other. Having a silver tea set is also quite a statement as they can be pricey and can easily stand as decorative items on their own.

Some tea sets are made from porous materials like clay. If they’re not glazed well, the material could absorb the tea and affect the flavour of future cups. That’s why porcelain is perfect. It’s non-porous and super easy to clean!

Fine bone china and steel are also materials worth considering.

PURISTS CLAIM LOOSE TEA IS BETTER

Some tea purists will tell you that supermarket-grade teabags will never come close to buying loose tea leaves. It might be the case that the type of paper used in teabags could also lead to the tea’s flavour being affected. If you’re careless, using teabags can also lead to over-steeping – it’s not the first time some of us were in the process of making a cup of tea and totally forgotten about it.

If you decide to go with loose tea leaves, make sure that you store them in an air-tight container and in dark, dry areas. Some teas should also be consumed within a certain amount of time.

BOIL SOME FILTERED WATER

Before thinking you need to go on a mountain trek to find the freshest and most natural water for your tea, take a breath – so long as you’re not tap or reheated water, you’re fine. Tap water contains chemicals that will affect the tea’s flavour, and reheated water has basically lost all its oxygen anyway. An electric kettle works just fine, though there are some really high-tech kettles out there that monitor the water’s temperature. Gooseneck kettles are quite popular now, too.

It’s essential that the water is boiled properly to release the tea’s tannins. Otherwise, it’ll be flavourless. However, this doesn’t apply to all types of tea. For example, green tea is far more sensitive to hot water and might taste bitter if too hot.

WARM YOUR TEAPOT

Swirl some of the boiled water around in your teapot beforehand. It’s said that this will ensure you’ll get a stronger brew out of the tea as it’ll help keep the temperature stable. It will also prevent your teapot from cracking; if you’re adding boiled water to a teapot that’s at room temperature, the drastic temperature change could damage the material. Once the pot is warmed, throw the used water away.

PLACE YOUR TEA

Some say you shouldn’t add boiled water directly onto your teabag or loose tea, though this differs for each type of tea and their specific preparation. If it’ll make you feel better, fill the teapot first and then scoop the tea into it. If you’re using loose tea leaves, leave the teapot lid open for more oxygen to get in.

You’ll notice that the tea leaves will expand considerably. This is important to keep in mind if you’re using a tea strainer. You don’t have to pack in a huge amount of tea leaves as they won’t have room to expand. Some teapots have built-in strainers, too, making the whole operation a lot easier.

LET THE TEA STEEP

The recommended amount of time to leave the tea steeping in the boiled water is between three to five minutes. Herbal teas should be left steeping for longer than five minutes. The longer you leave the tea, the stronger the flavour will be. That being said, remember that there’s the chance of the flavour also becoming too bitter.

ADD MILK (AND POSSIBLY SUGAR)

After you’ve poured the tea into your chosen cup, it’s time for your chosen additives. Most teas are consumed with milk. And while we’re on the subject, it’s time to do away with a particular misconception about which should be added first: tea or milk. The answer is always tea first, followed by a small quantity of milk. There’s no point drinking tea if you’re only appreciating the milk.

To continue espousing Orwell’s methods in his 1946 essay, a non-creamy type of milk is preferable, and sugar shouldn’t be added. But, of course, everyone has their own preferences. After all, Orwell only believed in drinking Indian or Ceylon tea.

NEVER REUSE TEA

You won’t get a stronger flavour of tea by leaving the tea to steep longer. If you want a bolder taste, just add more tea! There’s also nothing wrong with squeezing the teabag if that’s the form you’ve gone for, but only do this if you’re adding milk as it’ll help mask an otherwise too bold or bitter flavour.

HAVE A BISCUIT!

It’s time to enjoy your tea with a bite-sized snack. Who can resist a scrumptious baked good?! Don’t mind if we do.

Keep an eye out for the final blog post in our tea party campaign where we’ll be talking about the most popular types of tea available in the world!

FENG SHUI YOUR HOME FOR COMFORT & PRODUCTIVITY

By Family, Home Comforts, Life & Style No Comments

Literally translating to “wind water”, feng shui is an ancient Chinese method of organising one’s external surroundings to achieve inner balance. According to this concept, even inanimate objects contain energy, or “chi”, which can be harnessed to our benefit if properly positioned. Think of organisation gurus like Marie Kondo, whose popular books and Netflix series have reminded people that individuals and their homes are connected. A messy person would probably result in a messy home, and vice versa.

If you want to harmonise yourself and your surroundings, try these feng shui instructions on achieving the maximum amount of positive energy in your home. You might see a real change!

GET RID OF CLUTTER

It’s often said that a cluttered house results in or is indicative of a cluttered mind. While we’re not advocating for a form of radical minimalism, humans undeniably display a tendency towards hoarding, especially out of sentiment.

If you’re holding onto a bunch of items you don’t even like (think of all those unwanted gifts you’ve stashed away that never see the light of day), they’re not only taking up useful space, but are also a constant source of negative energy. Replace them with items that bring you joy and see how your days immediately brighten up! After all, William Morris once said: “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.”

BEDROOMS SHOULD BE SANCTUARIES

Being the place where you rest and recharge for a new day, the bedroom is perhaps the most important area in your home. Because of this, you should make an extra effort to turn it into a veritable sanctuary. This means keeping all forms of technology and reminders of work out of it (these will only serve as reminders of your obligations), along with warm lighting (bright lighting has a higher resonance, which will prevent you from shutting down and relaxing), soft fabrics, and neutral colour tones.

If you have a storage bed, it’s not recommended to place items like books or shoes underneath it, as these are considered to have “active” energy, and will therefore prevent restful slumber. To promote air flow, make sure that you have equal space on either side of the bed, and that the mattress isn’t directly touching the floor.

It’s also beneficial to get into the habit of making your bed every morning and thanking it for supporting you all night (something Marie Kondo is famous for incorporating in her organisation style), as this will create an atmosphere of gratefulness.

INCORPORATE NATURE’S ELEMENTS & COLOURS

The elements of wind and water that literally make up the term feng shui are the same ones that make up the air we breathe and the water our bodies are composed of. We are meant to understand that we are a part of nature, and should strive to be in harmony with it. By bringing the outdoor indoors, you’ll be creating a calming sense of peace, serenity, and a reminder to remain grounded, all while reducing anger and anxiety.

Incorporate all five elements (wood, water, earth, fire, and metal) into your décor with wooden furniture, candles, and living plants (which have their own chi), though if you’re not great with the latter, opt for higher quality artificial ones. Keep your windows clean to let as much natural light into your home as possible, make sure surfaces are regularly dusted to prevent an atmosphere of stagnation, and create a vertical aesthetic with floor-to-ceiling bookcases and tall plants to help give a sense of growth and expansion.

MIRRORS REFLECT ENERGY

In feng shui, there’s something known as “command positions”. Essentially, certain pieces of furniture should be placed in a dominant area of the room, such as beds in bedrooms and desks in home offices. With regards to the former, a bed should be placed in such a position that will have a view of the entrance, called the “mouth of chi”, but without being directly in line with it.

Preferably, the bed should be diagonal to the door, or, if not feasible, a mirror can be hung in such a way as to provide a reflection of it. Mirrors are great reflectors of energy, so place them in areas where you want to increase energy flow.

OPEN YOUR DOORS

How else is energy going to get in? Leaving your doors and windows open will help new, positive energy to flow in and clear all the old, negative energy out, not to mention provide cleaner air. Want to attract more prosperity? Place a red flowering plant (or red colours in general) near the front door to invite good fortune and luck!

While soft lighting is good for a room you rest in, use brighter lights in hallways. Corridors create an interconnecting route throughout the entire house, so the higher energy resonance from bright lights will ensure a stronger connection. The higher wattage is said to be good for keeping veins and arteries clean and unblocked, too.

While it’s important to keep doorways free of obstacles, especially the front door, be careful with runaway chi. Getting rid of clutter doesn’t mean having an entirely empty house. Pieces of furniture and decorative objects placed in a meandering pattern is a good way of impeding energy entering the house and preventing it from simply escaping.

CREATE YOUR OWN LITTLE READING NOOK

By Books & Reading, Home Comforts, Life & Style No Comments

If you’re a bibliophile like the rest of us here at We Are Not a Shop, you’ve probably always dreamed of constructing your very own personal reading nook from an early age, a place decorated with all your favourite things where you can escape from the world and into the pages of some ancient tome or riveting paperback.

We’re here to tell you that it’s actually not that difficult to create one! Here are some things to take into consideration when transforming your space into a bookworm’s fantasy.

COMFORTABLE SEATING

While it’s great that some individuals find it more productive to stand while doing their reading and/or writing (Ernest Hemingway famously typed at a makeshift standing desk), some of us prefer to sit comfortably snug in a cosy armchair or bed wrapped in blankets and surrounded by plump cushions. You could even incorporate a hammock and be gently swayed as you relax. Make sure it’s not too comfortable, though, or you might fall asleep!

SOFT LIGHTING

You’re going to want some form of lighting in your habitat so as not to strain your eyes while reading. At the same time, however, garish lighting could completely destroy the soothing ambience you worked so hard to create. Opting for warm as opposed to bright lighting will allow you to read in perfect comfort. Twinkle lights can add an element of magic to any surrounding, while trusty candles create an air of sophistication (as well as a pleasant aroma if you opt for fragrant ones).

REFRESHMENT STATION

Who said you can’t have a beverage handy when you’re halfway through a good book? A quaint decorative table is all you’ll need to construct a small refreshment station for tea, coffee, or whatever else you fancy. Place all of your drinking accoutrements on it and make a statement at the same time! It’s always a pleasure to have something prepared in case a guest drops by.

BREATHE SOME FRESH AIR

In a world choking with pollution of all kinds, it’s important to make your living space a haven of health. It’s best if your reading nook is in a room that has at least one window (which you can decorate with some curtains and stunning cords) so that you aren’t constantly breathing the same air. Throw that window open and add a scent diffuser to clean all that negative energy out. It’s also a great idea to get some air-cleaning plants, though if you’re not the best with greenery, some artificial flowers could go a long way in making your reading room look like an enchanted outdoor hideaway.

NO TECHNOLOGY

It’s becoming a well-known scientific fact that we shouldn’t keep any technological items in areas where we rest. It’s suggested that we should stop looking at television screens and mobiles about an hour before going to bed, as the kind of light these devices emit can affect our REM cycles, preventing us from falling into a truly beneficial sleep.

What’s more, it’s said that such devices emit ultrasonic waves that can further prevent our brains from shutting down after a long day’s work, so avoid having them in close proximity. In the case of your reading nook, you probably won’t get much reading done if you’re constantly checking your phone every time a new notification comes in! Smuggle them away out of sight in a small container somewhere.

INCORPORATE YOUR OWN PERSONALITY

Style is subjective, and at the end of the day, it’s your reading nook, so it makes sense that you should decorate it according to how you see fit and with those things you have a close attachment to. Store your personal curios in a glass cabinet for visitors to marvel at, and create a gallery wall lined with beautiful art that speaks to the artist in you.

BOOKS, BOOKS, AND MORE BOOKS

Of course, what kind of reading nook would it be without material to read? If you’re an avid book collector, put up some ornate shelves that’ll speak for themselves as objects of beauty and gradually add your favourite books to your personal library. Depending on whether you’re the sort of person to loan books or hoard them all for yourself (we’re not judging!), a wall of books makes for a very sophisticated look and makes the owner seem especially cultured.

LUKE GALEA, CULTURED ACADEMIC & AVID READER

By Books & Reading, Home Comforts No Comments

Cultured academic and avid reader Luke Galea (@luke.reads) loves anything with a story – the more character, the better. Today, we’re chatting to him about his favourite We Are Not a Shop picks.

The Grand Master’s Palace Courtyard Cushion Cover is just what you need to give your living room a subtle nod to Malta.

Hi, Luke! Thanks for joining us. Could you tell us about your We Are Not a Shop selections?

For starters, I picked Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón because it was one of the first books I read while studying for my Masters. It was recommended to me by an American friend, and I devoured it in one sitting. That was 11 years ago now, so it’s quite nostalgic to me.

Find a moment of peace and escapism with this novel.

Perhaps an obvious choice, but I had to go with Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, too – self-explanatory, really! I got into reading because of the Harry Potter series. It was such a constant in my life; every year, I would read and re-read all the books in anticipation of the next installment in the anthology. I still watch the movies every Christmas (yes, all eight of them). What can I say? I’m a fan. I particularly like the illustrations in this edition – some of them are quite creepy!

A cult classic, and this one’s even signed and dated by artist Jim Kay!

I also picked an antique Napolean III blue scent bottle. I really like small decorative trinkets for the home, and this colour instantly caught my eye – I think it would make a lovely addition to my study.

A gorgeous blue trinket for your collection.

Finally, I had to pick this striking flower arrangement. I adore flowers, but I was not gifted with green fingers. And, to make matters even worse, I live in a very damp house, which means that my plants tend to have a 50-50 chance of survival. So, my partner and I have been on a mission to buy real-looking, artificial plants for our living room. When I saw this, I thought, “Perfect!” It’s beautiful, small, and you can display it anywhere.

No water, no problem.

Thanks for sharing those with us, Luke. Now, what do you like the most about We Are Not a Shop?

I think it’s the sheer variety of items there are to choose from. You can find something for anyone – I can’t wait to tell my friends about it!

We’re glad you love it! Did you choose any of your items with someone specific in mind?

Yes, I have a few friends who would be super excited to receive some vintage items from the Collectors’ Corner. They try to live more sustainably by giving previously owned items a new home, so some products at We Are Not a Shop would be right up their street.

A charming illustrated dictionary with 350 engravings.

Finally, what item would you most want to receive as a gift?

There are so many! I would say either the nautical-themed cushion cover or the gorgeous blue and white pottery dish – it’s impossible to choose between the two!

Spruce up any corner of your home with this nautical-themed cushion cover.

We won’t make you choose, Luke; you can have them both! Thanks for chatting to us!

BECKY GERA, WRITER & MUM-OF-TWO

By Family, Home Comforts, Life & Style No Comments

Writer and mum-of-two Becky Gera has a great sense of humour and an appreciation for the smaller, more sentimental things in life. Today, she’s chatting to us about her favourite We Are Not a Shop picks!

Becky, we’re so happy to have you with us! Could you tell us about some of your favourite We Are Not a Shop items?

For starters, I absolutely love all the greeting cards at We Are Not a Shop. I’m really into snail mail and have recently been sending cards to a friend of mine who lives in Ireland. We don’t know when we’ll get to see each other again so it’s a nice way to connect and cheer each other up on a rainy day. I always crack a smile when one of her funny cards pops through their letter box, so I make it my mission to return the good feelings.

As for my choices on the site, this one is particularly hilarious – the humour is right up my street.

“I do often mistake CrossFit for croissants…oops.”

I also love this Table-Talk game because I’m a sucker for a good conversation starter. Some of the questions are quite deep so it would make for some very entertaining dinner party chat!

A dinner party must-have!

Oh, and this tea towel is great fun too. It’s the small details that can really make or break a space, so having a fun tea towel to dress up your kitchen can really transform it (and add a touch of personality, too).

A bit of wit for your kitchen top…

Great choices, Becky! Can you tell us what you like most about the We Are Not a Shop concept?

I love that there is such an eclectic mix of items on the website. It feels a bit like the ‘cave of wonders’ in Aladdin – you never know what you’re going to find. Plus the fact you’re buying things for a good cause makes it even better.

I’ve already started recommending We Are Not a Shop to my friends and will definitely keep it in mind when I’m looking to do a spot of shopping myself.

A pretty pen and pouch set for your writer friends!

Did you pick any of your items for anyone in particular?

I had a few people in mind, yes. I’d probably buy this shopping bag for my mum – you can never have too many shopping bags, eh? I also think my girls would really enjoy these strawscolouring pencils, and this adorable birthday book. And I’d have to gift the Table-Talk cards to a friend of mine who always asks the most thought-provoking questions – only fitting.

Perfect to keep your kids entertained!
Got to keep track of those dates!

Finally, is there anything you would most like to receive as a gift yourself?

This card. As I mentioned, snail mail is kind of my thing and I’d be super thrilled to receive it – it would totally make my day! People don’t send cards much anymore, which is such a pity because I think it’s such a great way to show somebody you’re thinking of them.

Some of the items selected by Becky, including a natural Hessian bag with navy binding. Cool, classic, and convenient.

We couldn’t agree more. Thanks so much for joining us today Becky, and we hope your friend enjoys her next card!

There’s something ancient-looking about this pomegranate-shaped box made from zamac (€3.25). The website also has a silver version, but we liked this gold one because it fulfills all our mythological interests. Could this be the famed fruit that doomed Persephone to half a year of darkness?

Add some spring flair to your walls with these decorative tin plates. The Goodge Violet Tin Plate (€7.15) features a violet design, taken from a plate commissioned by the French state at the end of the Franco-Prussian war after Napoleon III was deposed. Couple it with the pinks, golds, greens, and blues of the Gold Butterfly Tin Plate (€7.15), featuring a reproduction design of a saucer made by the Chelsea Porcelain Factory in London between 1758 and 1769.

This recycled glass water bottle with stopper (€14.25) would be perfect for the environmentally conscious, but can equally double as a vase or just a decorative item in general. This kind of lustrous glass has become quite collectible. You just don’t get that kind of sheen in glass bottles anymore.

This simple yet elegant glass vase from AD Trends (€22.95) is a staple for any home. If you’re not in the habit of bringing real flowers indoors for environmental or allergy-related reasons, We Are Not A Shop stocks a remarkably lifelike range of artificial flowers that are admittedly quite lovely to look at. You won’t have to worry about flower maintenance, and you can have them all year round!

To continue with our gold aesthetic, this pair of vintage Italian brass hook sconces with ceramic roses (€27.15) are, in our opinion, stunning. Even if you don’t end up fixing them to the wall for practical use, they’re just so pretty to look at that you can leave them standing on a shelf in a corner.

SOAPS & FRAGRANCES

Yes, we’ve provided for your interior decorating needs, but that only covers one of your sense – sight. What about scent? There’s a whole array of soaps and fragrances available at We Are Not A Shop that will really make your home a pleasant place to relax in.

This selection of Max Benjamin Room Diffusers would make the perfect gift, both for others and for yourself. Believe us when we say they’re very effective in changing the ambience of a room. The fragrances you can choose from include Dodici (€35.00), containing oils of rosemary, Sicilian lemon, marjoram, and Tuscan lavender; White Lilies (€35.00); Rose & Champagne (€35.00), containing top notes of pink grapefruit and blackcurrant mixed with pomegranate and hyacinth; and the stunning Dolce Sole (€38.00), inspired by the scents of the Italian coastline, combining bergamot, tangerine, rosemary, jasmine, vetiver, and musk. While the prices might seem steep, keep in mind that these diffusers last for around four months!

If you want to keep the fragrance aspect and also have the added benefit of natural lighting, then these Crabtree & Evelyn Aromathology Candles are for you. The Relaxation candle (€13.25) contains lavender, tangerine, and clary sage, while the Romance candle (€13.25) contains patchouli and rose.

Bring glorious scents into your bathroom as well with this 500ML Hand Wash and Moisturiser from the Aspire Collection designed in aid of Save the Valletta Skyline Appeal by local perfumer Stephen Cordina (€15.74). Your hands will be both moisturised after use and lightly scented with hints of jasmine, oud, and grapefruit.

Don’t stop there! Your clothing needs to be taken care of, too. This box containing six Laura Ashley Drawer Liners (€8.75), scented with citrus blossom and nectarine, are the perfect way of keeping your clothes smelling fresh and like you’ve just been frolicking in nature.

CUSHIONS

Truth be told, we’re rather obsessed with cushions. But when it comes to changing from darker, colder seasons into lighter, warmer ones, the choice of colours and fabrics can make all the difference. You’re bound to find something to your liking among We Are Not A Shop’s impressive range of cushions and cushion covers. Luckily, in the case of cushion covers, the shop also stocks feather or polyester cushion inserts of various sizes.

You can’t really go wrong with this minimal set of Ragged Rose Bobby and Arabella scatter cushions, each with adorable pom pom trims, and complete with their own polyester inserts. Collect them all in delicious summer gold (€25.00), delicate soft pink (€22.50), savoury burnt orange (€25.00), and magical lovat green (€25.00).

Our personal favourites are these hand-painted cushions, one with bright, bold pink and yellow colours (€25.00), and the other with a more multi-coloured array of blue, green, yellow, and pink (€25.00). They’re made from canvas, so they’re waterproof and therefore ideal for outdoor use.

HOME OFFICE

Spring and summer aesthetics don’t have to be relegated just to living spaces. Bring some colour to the areas in your home where you work, with a Notelet Block showing bluebirds, containing 800 blank sheets of paper from sustainable forests (€6.50), a flowery pink Mini Home Office (€8.50), and a Handmade Mulberry Paper Notebook (€13.75) from the Karen tribe in Thailand.

GARDENING

If you’re looking to get your hands dirty in your journey towards becoming a gardening expert, you’ll need the proper tools for the job. Try out this Four Seasons Planter Set (€24.50), containing a natural wooden-handled trowel and fork, as well as a pretty flowered kneeling pad.

Happy reading!

SUSTAINABLE LIVING

Making sure that your home is beneficial to your health and environmentally friendly has become essential in such a chaotic world. Thankfully, there are a number of books out there that aim to help you with just that.

Chris van Uffelen’s Façade Greenery: Contemporary Landscaping (€11.00) is great for those who want to go green but don’t really have the space for it. Who said gardens have to be horizontal? Green walls will not only help ecologically and make an area look like a forgotten wilderness, as there are also a number of architectural advantages, such as improved building climate quality and optimised energy balance. Essentially, you’ll be able to keep your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter! This is a great way of getting into the booming sphere of sustainable architecture.

Sally Coulthard’s The Bee Bible: 50 Ways to Keep Bees Buzzing(€10.95) pops out, not least because of its quaint cover. This “illustrated guide to helping the world’s best-loved insect” confronts the worrisome depletion in the bee population. These extremely important insects are essential for the pollination of the world. Coulthard’s book shows you fifty ways we can help, be it placing particular flowers in your garden to attract them, campaigning for them, or even learning a little bit about “bee whispering.”

Megean Weldon’s An Almost Zero Waste Life: Learning How to Embrace Less to Live More (€15.75) is one of many additions to the “zero waste living” trend, a way of living without sending anything to a landfill. Weldon helps in all domestic areas, including cleaning, meal plans, shopping, recycling, and much more!

To accompany Chris van Uffelen’s book, Ula Maria’s Green: Simple Ideas for Small Outdoor Spaces(€16.00) is another great guide for those having to make do with smaller outdoor living spaces. Indeed, it’s designed for those with “small gardens, terraces, balconies, and roof gardens who see their outdoor space as an extension of their home, rather than the horticulturally committed,” and employs low-maintenance items.

DECLUTTERING & FENG SHUI

Opening the windows and letting in the spring breeze is one of the best feelings in the world. Dust off those cobwebs and take a look at these books on decluttering, organisation, and the art of rearranging your furniture to allow maximum energy flow through your living space, otherwise known as feng shui.

Get these two Lillian Too books together for a negligible price. Too is a world-famous feng shui writer, and these compact guides are perfect to “keep the endless chi flowing abundantly into your living space”. Take a look at Lillian Too’s Basic Feng Shui: An Illustrated Reference Manual (€4.65) and Lillian Too’s Personalised Feng Shui Tips (€4.45).

In case you’re still obsessed with the concept of feng shui and want to go a step further in Asian-inspired interiors, Kelly Hoppen’s East Meets West: Global Design for Contemporary Interiors (€12.00) showcases the author’s travels through Asia and Europe, and “considers colour, fabric, texture, and objets d’art in a broad sweet of decorative influence that embraces Southeast Asia, from China to Japan.”

Get decluttering and organisational advice from YouTuber Cassandra Aarssen’s Real Life Organising: Clean and Clutter-Free in 15 Minutes a Day (€11.85). We believe that less is more, so if you’re looking to purge some items that you’ve been holding onto for all the wrong reasons (guilt and sentiment come to mind), this guide will help you finally take control over your living space. You’ll free up a lot of time during the day to do all the things you love!

For a more European touch, but one that still embraces minimalist qualities, try Hans Blomquist’s The Natural Home (€15.00), in which the influential art director and stylist explores “the essence of his style” through “interiors inspired by the beauty of the natural world,” all captured by Debi Treloar’s enigmatic photographs.

Learn how to bring the fragrance of spring into your home by reading Karen Wheeler’s The Scented Home: Living with Fragrance (€20.00). The benefits of aromatherapy are well-documented, and the scent of flowers is a love language all of its own. As Wheeler states, “spritzing bed linen with lavender water to promote sleep, or burning a sandalwood candle to help you unwind, has become as natural as choosing your colour scheme.”

REDECORATING ON A BUDGET

It’s all well and good when you catch the redecorating bug, but the financial aspect is a fact of life and sometimes needs to be adhered to. Nowadays, we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to ideas, interior decorators, and the huge amount of stuff you can potentially line your walls and floors with. But you have to start somewhere! These books are a melting pot of the best tips for redecorating on a budget.

First on the list is Matt McKinney’s self-explanatory title, Interior Decorating on a Budget: A Budget-Friendly Guide to Creating a Home Which Makes You Truly Feel “at Home” and Happy (€9.45). As the book’s blurb explains: “You can have the home which looks like the ones that you see in magazines without spending a fortune. You can learn how to decorate your home like a professional without paying a professional.” That sounds ideal!

For any DIY-ers out there, Annie Sloan’s Quick and Easy Paint Transformations: 50 Step-by-Step Ways to Makeover Your Home for Next to Nothing (€11.00) is a must-have. Sloan is revered as a “paint legend”, so you’ll be safe in her hands when you finally take the plunge into “spring into summer” redecorating. If you’re interested in what else Sloan has to offer, you can also check out her other book, Colour Recipes for Painted Furniture and More: 40 Step-by-Step Projects to Transform Your Home (€11.00).

And that’s all from us! We’ve given you quite a good selection of affordable sources of inspiration for redecorating your home while also considering environmental sustainability.
