LORINDA MAMO, LIFESTYLE BLOGGER, GRAPHIC DESIGNER & INTERDISCIPLINARY CREATIVE

By Fashion, Home Comforts, Life & Style No Comments

If you’re looking for original and thoughtful gift ideas, We Are Not A Shop is the online store for you. Particularly if you’re shopping for those tricky people who just seem to have everything – there’s bound to be something for them, too!

You may recognise Lorinda Mamo from her popular Instagram account @abirdwithafrenchfry, where she documents life with her son, Henry – a charismatic young man and survivor of PBS (prune belly syndrome), currently living with CKD (chronic kidney disease).

But Lorinda is also a graphic designer, blogger, interdisciplinary creative, and founder of HappyPlayCo – what can’t she do, right? Today, however, she’s taking a short break from her many jobs to sit down with us to discuss all things We Are Not A Shop. Find out what she had to say below.

Lorinda, we’re so glad you could join us. Could you talk us through some of the items you selected today?

Thank you for inviting me, I’m very excited to be here.

To kick things off, this book really caught my eye. I love homemade things, so this is right up my street. I wanted to crack open the pages as soon as I saw the cover.

Then, I picked this mystery puzzle box, because, frankly, I had seen it before and couldn’t stop thinking about it. It’s full of little details and intricacies which I find so magical.

This ring is beautiful, too. I don’t know what to say other than that it’s gorgeous. I’m really into my statement rings and this one finds a perfect balance between boldness and classic elegance.

I also must confess that I am big on stationery. I’ve been collecting stationery items since I was a young girl, so, when I saw these fun pencils, I simply had to have them. I’m a fan of their colour and the quotes written on them. From a graphic design perspective, I think the font is great, too. They’ll definitely bring a smile to my face the next time I’m writing out a to-do list.

I also picked this super elegant evening bag from your jewellery and fashion section. I recently had a gala event and had to scour most of Malta looking for a black evening bag – to no avail! This would have been perfect, though. It’s such a timeless piece which I can see myself wearing over and over again. I always prefer classic clothes to very trendy pieces, and this fits the bill.

Then, this music box instantly reminded me of my son, which is why I gravitated toward it. I sing this song to him myself, so it’s a bit sentimental I suppose.

Now, I’m admittedly not a huge makeup person, but this vintage powder and lipstick set was too gorgeous to leave behind. I mean, look at that impeccable mother of pearl detail.

My last item was this letter sealing set, which screamed out to me because of my love of stationery (which we’ve already established). It’s just fantastic. Why don’t people still seal letters this way?

Those are some great pieces, Lorinda. Now, what was your most surprising selection?

The mystery box! I’m still not entirely sure what’s inside it, so it’ll definitely be a surprise when I figure it out.

Did you have a favourite section of the website?

The curiosities section. There are just so many unique pieces I’d never seen before.

What do you like about the We Are Not A Shop concept?

Well, for starters, I love how well-curated the website is and the wide selection of items available. There really is something for everyone. There’s everything from quirky vintage greeting cards to exquisite jewellery, and even one-of-a-kind kids’ toys.

How would you describe We Are Not A Shop to someone who doesn’t know about it?

As a unique online concept where all the proceeds go to charity.

Buying from We Are Not A Shop is also very exciting because you know that all the items are one-of-a-kind. So, if you’re not quick to snatch something up, someone else might grab it before you!

Would you recommend We Are Not A Shop to a friend?

Absolutely. If you’re looking for original and thoughtful gift ideas, We Are Not A Shop is the online store for you. Particularly if you’re shopping for those tricky people who just seem to have everything – there’s bound to be something for them, too.

LISA GRECH, FOUNDER OF MALTA’S THE DEFINITIVE(LY) GOOD GUIDE TO RESTAURANTS IN MALTA & GOZO AND MORE!

By Collecting, Food for thought, Life & Style No Comments

Lisa Grech is the powerhouse behind Malta’s The Definitive(ly) Good Guide to Restaurants in Malta & Gozo, the Malta Baby & Kids Directory, Malta Artisan Markets and her latest initiative Offbeat Malta Food Trails. It’s safe to say that Lisa knows a thing or two about hunting down unique, high-quality pieces, and that’s why, today, she’s sitting down with us to discuss her favourite We Are Not A Shop picks.

Lisa, we’re so glad you could join us! Could you talk us through some of your favourite We Are Not A Shop pieces?

With pleasure. Firstly, I thought this bracelet was beautiful and quite unusual. I love vintage jewellery – you could say I’m a bit of a collector. And I especially like my bracelets (as you can see from my arm!). This one is particularly pretty, though. This classic pair of earrings were another obvious choice – they’re well priced and super dainty.

These napkins also caught my eye. They feel great and the colours are fabulous, too. I have a large pink table in my home, and I think these napkins would make a welcome addition to my dining room décor.

Then, I thought that this cotton t-shirt would make the perfect souvenir for someone visiting the island. It’s got a simple and effective design, and is promoting the Save The Valletta Skyline charity – what’s not to like?

When I saw this scarf, I instantly thought of a friend of mine. It’s Nepalese cashmere and feels super smooth – great quality too. I suppose that’s his birthday present sorted!

Then, I couldn’t believe you had this copy of Diana for Girls on your website! I hadn’t seen one in years. As a child, I owned a few and would spend hours going through the pictures, drawings, and adventure stories. Reading this with my nine-year old daughter will be great fun.

Finally, this picnic backpack is so convenient. It’s got its own chopping board, wine opener, cutlery, glasses, and even its own cooling compartment. All it needs now is a bottle of wine and a nice selection of cheeses…

That’s quite the assortment you’ve got there! Now, what would you say was your most surprising selection?

I suppose the copy of Diana for Girls as I haven’t seen one in years! It was a welcome trip down memory lane.

Did you have a favourite section of the website?

Probably the jewellery one. But I have to say, I’m also a fan of the souvenir section –there’s so many original items that would make great gifts for my foreign friends.

What do you like about the We Are Not A Shop concept?

I think what’s great about We Are Not A Shop is that it’s so environmentally friendly. You’re recycling great pieces that may have otherwise been discarded (and what a pity that would have been). Of course, the initiative behind the concept is incredibly admirable, too. We could use a lot more of that on the market.

And how would you describe We Are Not A Shop to someone who doesn’t know about it?

An excellent website full of unique products where you can truly find something for everyone!

Finally, will we be seeing you again?

Oh, I’ll certainly be back. You have a return customer in me.

JIM DUNN, AUTHOR, BOOK FIEND & AVID TRAVELLER

By Books & Reading, Life & Style, Travel No Comments

Author, book fiend, self-professed shopaholic, former London PR man, and avid traveller James Dunn has visited almost every country in the world and has acquired quite the eclectic mix of items on the way. Today, he’s adding to his vast collection and chatting to us about what inspired his We Are Not A Shop picks.

Jim (can we call you that?), we’re so glad you could join us today. Let’s dive right in. Could you tell us a bit about your favourite We Are Not A Shop selections?

Firstly, yes you can (most people do!). As for the items I selected from the online store, the first thing that caught my eye was this bully beef can opener. It’s just so unique. Truth be told, I don’t open many cans on a day-to-day basis, but at least now (should the need arise) I’ve got a unique and functional can opener to do the job for me.

One thing you should know about me is that I absolutely love books. I think I must own close to a thousand at this point – it’s verging on ridiculous. Still, I couldn’t resist these hardbacks when I saw them on your website.

I had to grab In and Out of Africa because Out of Africa is one of my absolute favourite films. And I also have many fond memories of visiting the continent. As for the signed copy of Anne De Courcy’s book, I happen to know Anne personally, so you could say that I’m supporting a friend by purchasing it.

Over the years my partner and I have had the pleasure of travelling quite a bit, so I instantly gravitate towards anything travel-related, hence why I chose this one. Then, this Antique French Pediment would look gorgeous with some curtains attached to it. I can picture it hanging in my home already.

I’m also a bit of art collector. I don’t collect very expensive art mind you; I just like to support artists. That’s why I picked up this Richard England book. It’s got a lovely selection of pictures and sketches, and it’s signed too.

This map of Malta was another obvious choice. Whenever my partner and I (who have been together for over 54 years might I add, and he deserves a medal) buy a new home overseas, we always like to have a map of the country on display. It just adds a personal touch. Here in Malta, we live in the Three Cities – my favourite spot on the island. It’s extremely up-and-coming and is quite the gay haven. Bet you didn’t know that!

Finally, I thought this urn was truly magnificent. The detail is spectacular, and I love the Hong Kong influence. I travelled to and worked a lot in Hong Kong in the 80s, we had a number of tourism PR accounts there.

That’s quite the selection Jim! Now, what will you be doing with your items?

Well, I’d love to put this urn in my drawing room, but I just don’t have the space! All the books will have a home on my bookshelves, though.

What would you say was your most surprising selection?

Certainly, the bully beef can opener. It instantly grabbed my attention. As far as books go though, I was quite surprised by The Cheetah’s Tale. Reason being, I’ve met the princess a few times (through my work with the Oxford Literary Festival) and I never knew she had written anything of this style before – her work is typically more fictional.

Did you have a favourite section of the website?

That’s a no brainer, the book section of course.

We should have guessed! And what do you like about the We Are Not A Shop concept?

Well, I love the fact that there is such a variety of items available that cater to so many different collectors. Whoever came up with the idea deserves a pat on the back – it’s brilliant. The only thing you don’t sell is food, but never say never I suppose. It’s really got everything.

Well, on that note, Jim, watch this space. How would you describe We Are Not A Shop to someone who doesn’t know about it?

As one of greatest online sources for gifts around. I often recommend it to people!

Finally, will we be seeing you again?

Well, I hope so! I’ll certainly be skimming the website on the regular that’s for sure.

VALENTINE’S DAY GIFT IDEAS

By Life & Style, Occasions No Comments

You can’t buy love – but you can buy the perfect gift! Feast your eyes on some of these items, ranging from the beautiful and stylish to the downright hilarious.

Bring a touch of rococo indulgence into your home with this impressive hand-cast statue! Finished by Toscano artisans using white bonded marble resin, it’s a replica of 18th-century French sculptor Clodion’s Zephyrus & Flora. The god of the west wind embraces the goddess of flowers, crowning her with a wreath of roses, while little angels scatter flowers all around. What better way to tell your loved one that they remind you of a fresh spring breeze?

If you wanted something a little bit more understated, then opt for this equally charming keepsake, a statue in the form of a pair of cherubs holding the letters “LOVE”. It’s created from off-white resin, while the painted white highlights give it an overall marble-life effect. A wonderful testament to your enduring love!

Get that special someone a little trinket to adorn themselves, specifically this turquoise resin heart charm cluster bracelet. Also consisting of white pearl and Tibetan silver-coloured charms, it’s a personal and pretty way of telling someone you love them!

And as for the traditional gift of roses? Don’t let your love return to the earth as all flowers must. Rather, choose this bouquet of twelve red roses. They may be artificial, but at least they’ll be a permanent reminder of what’s sure to be a memorable Valentine’s Day!

Nothing says love like the comforts of home! Who doesn’t want to get cosy and cuddle up on the sofa during a thunderstorm? Having this plump cushion behind you will only add to the experience! Large fuchsia applique lettering spells out “LOVE” on a fuchsia and white striped background. It’s 100% cotton and comes with a polyester insert, too!

Don’t forget this adorable set of two bone china mugs to enjoy your tea in! One has “You” printed on the outside, while the other has “Me”. A cute way to avoid getting your drinks mixed up!

Valentine’s Day cards are absolutely essential! Demonstrate your love by putting some effort into a carefully thought-out handwritten note. This “You Make My Heart Go Boom” card is completely blank inside for all your inspired words to enrapture and enthral.

Some humour always goes a long way. Marry comedy and practically with this tea towel. It’s soft, highly absorbent, 100% cotton, and lint-free, which makes it great for drying glassware and covering food. The amusing flour sack-style lettering reads: “Cupid and Company – Valentines – Signed Sealed & Delivered”. A lovely addition to anyone’s kitchen!

Would you like to stun your partner? In a good way, of course! Then this antique mother of pearl card case is sure to do the trick. A date letter mark for London 1897 places this piece firmly in the Victorian era. The way it shimmers is further amplified by the silver heart applique on the front. Gorgeous!

This wooden music box is cute, small (it can fit in your pocket!), and actually quite beautiful with its decorated black finish. If you turn the handle, it’ll play “You Are My Sunshine”. What’s not to love?

Dress up on the big day with these heart-shaped glasses from Emblem Eyewear! Their red tint is very attractive, and the lenses are 100% UV high impact-resistant and protected. They also come with a soft pouch to keep them safe.

Round up your ensemble with a little keyring. It’s got two charms: an entwined heart (because, of course, you’re both madly in love) and a red enamel heart (the colour of the season). You’ll be the talk of the town when you paint the town red!

USE ASTROLOGY TO GET THE PERFECT VALENTINE’S GIFT

By Life & Style, Occasions No Comments

What do the stars have to say about how you express your love towards others? Apparently, quite a lot! When we refer to astrology, the first thing that comes to mind is a person’s Sun sign, which describes their overall personality traits. And believe it or not, you can use this form of star sleuthing to get your romantic partner the perfect gift.

ARIES

(21st March – 19th April)

You’re the headstrong ram of the zodiac, possessing an energy like no other. In love, you can be quite flirtatious, and others will have a hard time resisting your charms. It’s all about the thrill of the chase with you! But once you meet the love of your life, you’re ready to settle down and plant roots with them. If you manage to take control of your impulsive nature, your love will blossom.

Want to surprise your Aries partner with something they’d really appreciate? Plan a surprise adventure such as a romantic picnic – they will love your intrigue and spontaneity.

TAURUS

(20th April – 20th May)

The bull of the zodiac is all about creating a sense of stability and security in their lives. While you may be a bit stubborn at times, you’re incredibly loyal to your loved ones and will do anything to keep them safe. Be careful not to get too stuck in your daily routines; switch things up occasionally and your love life could take an exciting turn!

Make your Taurus partner happy by giving them something practical – maybe a gift for the home, a voucher, or even a pet!

GEMINI

(21st May – 21st June)

These twins are all over the place in the best possible way! If you’re a Gemini, you’ve got a million thoughts buzzing through your head, as well as the gift of the gab to put your ideas into words. You can be a bit flaky in your approach to love as there’s a tendency to get bored quickly, hopping onto the next exciting project. If you can learn to ground yourself (and if your partner can keep up with you), they’ll find that you’re a bubbly, kind, and sociable person.

Geminis love a good joke, so get your partner something that’ll amuse them, even if it’ll only be for a few seconds!

CANCER

(22nd June – 22nd July)

This crab has a tough exterior but is immensely soft on the inside. As a Cancer, you’re compassionate and sensitive, but also retreat into your shell when you’re hurt. A delicate touch and an understanding persona will help you become the best version of yourself!

Get your Cancer homebody a cosy item; a scented candle or a blanket will definitely be appreciated.

LEO

(23rd July – 22nd August)

The powerful lion of the zodiac can do anything it sets its mind to. You need affection from your romantic partner above all else. You’ll give them everything, but also expect the same amount in return, which is only fair! There are times your explosive outbursts can get the better of you, but it’s only because you’re a passionate person who requires emotional validation.

Leos are no stranger to enjoying the finer things in life, so a luxury gift will go down well.

VIRGO

(23rd August – 22nd September)

Virgo is the organiser of the zodiac. If you’re a Virgo, you’re a super practical individual who likes things to always be ‘just right’. Sometimes, you can get stuck inside your own melancholy thoughts, but the idea of perfecting different aspects of your life gives you purpose. You also enjoy using these talents to help others.

Get your Virgo partner something they can actually use, like some fancy stationery or even top-of-the-range home appliances.

LIBRA

(23rd September – 23rd October)

The scales of the zodiac are preoccupied with balance and harmony. As a Libra, you’re a great mediator, capable of resolving conflict in seconds, so your relationship is one that’s very level-headed – you won’t be rushing into anything without thinking about it first. While you’re a wonderful listener, it’s important to be authentic with your partner and be honest about your feelings.

Libras appreciate beauty, so delight their eyes with some unique art.

SCORPIO

(24th October – 21st November)

The solitary scorpion of the zodiac knows what you’re thinking without you having to say anything. Your Scorpio energy gives you a unique empathy that can help you understand your partner on a deeply emotional level. You’re not quick to open up, but once you do, you’re loyal and protective. When you feel like reacting out of spite, take a step back to maintain a healthy relationship!

Scorpios are attracted to the mysterious things in life, so get them something unusual.

SAGITTARIUS

(22nd November – 21st December)

If you’re the mythological archer of the zodiac, then you love to travel. You’re incredibly principled and it’s very difficult for anyone to pin you down. Your partner will have to adapt to your nervous energy that’s always pushing you to be on the move. An exciting and adventurous life awaits!

A Sagittarius loves to learn about different cultures, so a book on pretty much any subject would be ideal.

CAPRICORN

(22nd December – 19th January)

If you’re a Capricorn, it wouldn’t be a surprise if you’re already the CEO of a booming business. Your ambitions are larger than life, and you’re always looking to succeed at the next big thing. Your partner won’t be left in the dust, however; they can be the rock to your lofty foundations.

Get your Capricorn partner something that looks professional and smart – cool but serious!

AQUARIUS

(20th January – 18th February)

The water bearer of the zodiac feels it’s their solemn duty to help everyone on a grand scale. When you’re not multitasking as the manager of a large company, you can be found volunteering at a number of local charities. Luckily, your partner will be there to prevent you from getting ahead of yourself and suffering from burnout.

If you want to make an Aquarius happy on Valentine’s Day, then give to charity – We Are Not A Shop is entirely non-profit. Every single cent spent on purchasing our products will go straight to charitable causes.

PISCES

(19th February – 20th March)

The dreamy fish of the zodiac is the most difficult to define out of all the signs. As a Pisces, you’re generous to a fault, so you’ll need to set some strict boundaries. You’re also an incredibly creative person, tapping into your own form of spirituality. Your partner may not always understand you, but you’ll always have their back.

Allow a Pisces to release their artistic potential by gifting them with something creative they can lose themselves in.

IT’S TIME FOR A DIGITAL DETOX!

By Food for thought, Life & Style No Comments

“Everything in moderation”, so the saying goes. There’s good and bad to everything in life. Rather than giving into extremes by either overindulging or completely abstaining, finding a comfortable middle ground can be incredibly beneficial. In this case, we’re referring to technology, specifically the internet.

No one can deny the advantages of the internet. Ever since its advent, it’s blossomed into a meeting place for like-minded individuals, a place where one can share their creativity, perhaps even making a living off of it, and share love and support to individuals halfway around the world.

But as with anything else, things can easily go overboard if you’re not careful. Studies have shown that spending long periods of time without disconnecting from immersive technology can have many negative side-effects, both physically and mentally.

Here are some reasons why you should occasionally give the internet a break, as well as ways of implementing these methods seamlessly into your life.

SAFEGUARD YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

Unsurprisingly, studies have shown that people who are addicted to the internet, and social media more specifically, have a greater tendency to succumb to feelings of depression and loneliness. This occurs due to a very human habit of comparing ourselves to others. Indeed, the grass will always look greener on the other side.

Comparisons are odious and often the thief of joy. Looking at someone else’s life through a curated image or video will undoubtedly have negative effects – you’ll feel dissatisfied with your seemingly ordinary life and achievements. But that’s the unfortunate nature of social media, and why we should strive even more to be on our guard. Take our advice: the grass is greenest in the areas you water most.

MOVE YOUR BODY

Considering most of us already lead mostly sedentary lifestyles, barely ever getting up to stretch, the tragedy is that we spend what little free time we have doing exactly the same thing in exactly the same position. If you’re not checking your e-mails, you’re playing video games, scrolling through social media accounts, texting friends, or watching television. Dehydration, blurred vision, and headaches are among the few of many physical side-effects to not taking regular breaks from your work station. Occasionally, get up from that worn-out chair, get out of the house, and go for a walk.

TAKE BACK CONTROL

The feeling of being constantly “connected” can be immensely stressful to our minds and bodies. The average human will spend at least 11 hours of their day consuming information through technology. While we can learn a lot from the internet, it can also be comforting to take a break from it all. The key is setting boundaries and allowing technology to work for you rather than let it control your life.

Even though it hasn’t been officially identified as a legitimate addiction, there are a few tell-tale signs to know if you’re too attached to your device. Are you constantly checking it whenever a notification comes through? Do you find that you’re less productive than you used to be? When was the last time you spent time outdoors or had a real-life, face-to-face conversation? Do you feel you’re unsatisfied with your job? Does your night-time sleep do nothing for your daytime lethargy? If you ticked off more than one of these symptoms, then you’re probably addicted to some form of media device.

All of this stems from what has now been labelled as the “Fear of Missing Out”, or “FOMO”. Marketing experts know how to grab your attention, making you feel anxious about missing out on something. What’s more, today’s society consumes far more information in a few hours than those from 100 years ago consumed in a year. No wonder we’re stressed!

CREATE NO-TECH ZONES

Withdrawal is a real thing, regardless of the cause. You can make self-discipline easier by designating certain rooms as those in which you do use technology, and those in which you don’t. For example, your bedroom should be the one place in the house that has limited internet or technology usage.

If you’re not ready to stop all social media swiping after dark, try turning off the television or tablet about an hour before bedtime. You’ll most likely get a better night’s sleep without modern technology’s lights still blinking through your mind before you go to sleep. Perhaps you’ll also start finding yourself getting sleepier earlier, as your natural body clock recalibrates itself according to daylight.

If you really need to consume something before bedtime, opt for a book or magazine. Apparently, our minds are more efficient at sorting through information when read from physical paper!

REMOVE DISTRACTIONS

To prevent getting overwhelmed, it’s important to place a fine line between your work life and your personal life, a border that has unfortunately deteriorated over time. Leave your professional life where it belongs, though admittedly this would require even more self-discipline if you work remotely. The issue is that most of us remain in a work mind-frame after we’ve clocked out, leading to feelings of stress and of being overworked.

Studies have shown that even the mere presence of a mobile phone when you’re in the company of others, even one that you’re not currently using, can lower our ability to empathise with other persons. This has been dubbed the ‘iPhone effect’.

After work, take a break from the digital world, leaving only 30 minutes of the day to check personal connections, and limited to just one screen format. Eat your meals in peace and quiet, or else with nothing but the voice of a loved one to keep you company. If you can afford to, turn off any notifications on your phone, or delete your social media apps altogether. Once you start to discard the internet’s artificial goals, you might find yourself developing sharper focus, being liberated of any and all toxic behaviours and feelings of isolation.

Remember that it’s never great to quit something cold turkey! Be realistic with your detox goals by setting gradual limits to your tech usage. Eventually, you’ll have built up enough resilience to try out Cal Newport’s 30-day cleanse as suggested in his hit book, Digital Minimalism (2019).

How will you be tackling your own digital detox? Are there any particular activities you enjoy that don’t involve a WiFi connection? Let us know in the comments below!

SO WHAT NOW?

Now that you’re no longer a slave to social media, you’re free to get back to your journey of self-discovery and figure out who you really are without all those distractions. Restart that hobby you always meant to pick up again but couldn’t because of work obligations. Use this new free time to start working out more and feel refreshed throughout the day. Spend time with people you love and have an actual, face-to-face conversation with them without the temptation of a notification on the side. Or else…just unwind! Nothing says ‘freedom’ like being able to do absolutely nothing, especially in today’s society that can make us feel guilty for not working at or achieving something.

BEN CAMILLE, TV PRESENTER, ACTOR & PROUD DAD

By Family, Life & Style No Comments

TV presenter, actor, and proud dad, Ben Camille, has been pretty busy hosting Malta’s most-watched tv show, the X Factor, of late. Today, however, he’s taken the time to sit down with us and talk about some of his favourite We Are Not A Shop pieces. And just in time for Christmas! Discover what he selected from our online store below!

Ben, we’re so happy to have you with us. What inspired you to pick the items you selected today?

It’s my pleasure. Well, the truth is, I’ve never really been a big fan of shopping… But, since having children, I’ve enjoyed shopping more than I ever thought possible. Their reactions make it all worth it.

To start things off, I picked this bouncing egg. My kids absolutely love eggs, so having a fake one lying around the house for them to play with (that doesn’t run the risk of breaking and making a mess) was a no brainer.

I also really like this mug – it’s just so aesthetically pleasing.

Then, I went for this bamboo straw. I’m quite the smoothie fan, so, a durable, reusable, and sustainable straw is a must for me. I also feel like paper straws can affect the taste of the smoothie or juice (maybe it’s just me?) so with this bamboo straw I can do my bit for the environment, without having to sacrifice on flavour.

When it came to these rubber ducks, I really had no choice but to get them because currently everything is “quack quack” in my house. It’s constantly “quack quack” this, and “quack quack” that from the kids; they’re obsessed.

Finally, I picked these lunch boxes because my daughter Elle has just started school, so these will come in handy for sure. Sending your kids off to school is such an emotional experience; I don’t think I was prepared. Initially, we were scared that Elle would cry when we dropped her off, but, on the contrary, she walked into the school super confidently and like she owned the place. I think was more upset…

That’s amazing. Did you pick any items with someone specific in mind?

My children, definitely.

We know this is a tough question, but do you have a favourite item?

I like them all! I can’t choose; they’re all great in their own way.

How would you describe We Are Not A Shop to someone who doesn’t know about it?

It’s a place where you can buy unique gifts for friends and family, with the added incentive that every cent of the money you’re spending will go to charity. If you’re going to buy something anyway, you might as well contribute to a good cause while you’re at it, right?

Is there anything you would personally like to receive as a gift for yourself?

I really do like this mug!

Now, what do you like about the We Are Not A Shop concept?

I love that We Are Not a Shop aims to make a positive difference in people’s lives – that’s an amazing thing.

Would you recommend We Are Not A Shop to a friend?

For sure. It’s a thumbs up from me!

FRANCESCA MIFSUD, FOUNDER OF ISLAND BEBE

By Family, Fashion, Life & Style No Comments

Francesca Mifsud is the savvy business brain behind Island Bebe – the online parenting platform offering local information, inspiration, and guidance for local parents and child carers on the island. With Christmas just around the corner, we’re so happy Francesca found time to chat to us about her top We Are Not A Shop picks. Find out what she selected, below.

Francesca, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Since we’re all gearing up for Christmas, could you talk us through some of your favourite festive picks?

I’d love to. The first thing I spotted was this alphabet storybook, which would make the perfect Christmas gift for my son. This is his first proper Christmas (he’s only 15 months old) so he’s experiencing everything for the first time, and we’d like to make it as memorable as possible.

Then, I went for this dog shampoo – which is self-explanatory really. My dog’s a total princess so it felt appropriate. She’s a very chilled, lazy, Labrador and we constantly spoil her with 5-star treatment. She’ll definitely enjoy this.

I also love this Christmas wreath. I’ve been on the lookout for a wreath for a while, and this one instantly caught my eye. It’s a gorgeous colour and will look great hung on my front door.

I wasn’t planning on buying anything for the men in my life, but the man flu recovery kit seemed like an ideal, tongue-in-cheek, stocking filler. I couldn’t not get it.

This set of pearls is beautiful, too. The pieces on We Are Not A Shop are so classic and elegant, you can really wear them with anything.

Then, I’m constantly searching for stocking fillers for the family, so this Christmas mug was right up my street. After all, everyone needs a holiday mug, don’t they?

Finally, I selected this squeaky chicken for my dog (I told you she’s spoilt). My son is always stealing her toys so it’s only fair that I find her replacements. I chose this dog tag for her too. Not that she needs it; she never leaves our side!

Did you pick any items with someone specific in mind?

I did indeed. It’s hard not to when all I’ve been thinking about is Christmas shopping.

So, I picked the book for my son, the dog items for…my dog, the man flu recovery kit for my father, and, finally, the pearls for my mother. I think she’ll adore them.

We know this is a tough question, but do you have a favourite item?

It’s probably a tie between the wreath and the pearls.

We love those, too! And is there anything you would personally like to receive as a Christmas gift?

A day to sleep! Jokes aside, I’d have to say this pair of handcrafted earrings. I rarely treat myself to jewellery, but I wouldn’t say no to receiving them as a gift.

How would you describe We Are Not A Shop to someone who doesn’t know about it?

A unique place to find something different for the special people in your life.

Now, what do you like about the We Are Not A Shop concept?

That the products are so original – you really don’t find pieces like this everywhere. The website is wonderfully curated with a fantastic mix of items for anyone to enjoy. And I love the fact that it’s all for charity, of course.

Would you recommend We Are Not A Shop to a friend?

Yes, all day every day.

TARYN MAMO CEFAI, RADIO HOST, ACTRESS & CONTENT CREATOR

By Food for thought, Life & Style, Travel, Uncategorised No Comments

Radio host, actress and content creator, Taryn Mamo Cefai, has been busy turning her new house into a home over the past few months. Today, she’s sitting down with us to chat about all her favourite We Are Not A Shop pieces. Read on to discover what she selected from our online store.

Taryn, we’re so glad you could join us. Could you tell us what inspired your selection of pieces today?

Thank you for having me. I chose things that represented different sides of my personality. To start things off, I went with these two mugs. This one because it has a sheep on it (and I love sheep), and the other one purely because it made me laugh. I also collect mugs on my travels, so they’ll fit right in with the rest of my collection.

These gold hoops are gorgeous, too. I’m obsessed – I don’t think I’ve ever come across a pair of hoops I didn’t like…

Then, I can really picture these three cushions in my new living room. I chose this one because it’s a fun representation of Malta (I’m Maltese and proud!). Then, this one because it’s the perfect pop of colour to brighten up my interior. And finally, I picked this zebra cushion because it will look great with the other African touches I’m planning to incorporate into my living area. The cushions all complement each other nicely, too, so I’m looking forward to seeing them together.

I also selected this travel book because  I am quite the avid traveller – you can never travel enough, if you ask me. It’s my therapy; where I let loose, meet new people, and experience new things. More importantly, it helps me keep everything in perspective.

Lastly, this necklace is such a unique collectors’ item, I couldn’t resist.

Great picks, Taryn. Did you pick any of them with someone specific in mind?

I guess I picked out this mug with all my single friends in mind…

Now, we know this is a tough question, but do you have a favourite item?

That is a tough one! It’s a tie between the mug and the travel book. I drink tea about eight times a day, so the mug will definitely come in handy. While the book is something I can see myself flicking through fairly often. I’ll have to go with both, don’t make me choose one!

How would you describe We Are Not A Shop to someone who doesn’t know about it?

An online store with a difference.

Now, what do you like about the We Are Not A Shop concept?

It’s a fantastic concept. If you’re going to buy a gift for someone this Christmas, you might as well donate to a worthy cause at the same time! It’s a great thing that We Are Not a Shop are doing.

Finally, would you recommend We Are Not A Shop to a friend?

Definitely!

JOSEPH SAMMUT, AUCTIONEER & ANTIQUE CONNOISSEUR

By Collecting, Life & Style No Comments

Antique connoisseur and auctioneer of Belgravia Auction Gallery, Joseph Sammut, loves a vintage piece with a story. Today, he’s sitting down with us to talk all things We Are Not A Shop. Find out what he selected from our online store, below.

Joseph, we’re so glad you’ve joined us! Could you tell us why you picked the items you selected today?

Of course. My first choice was this joke box – it’s a no-brainer for me. I’m quite the practical joker, so this was right up my street. My wife always says that, one day, I’ll be clobbered for being a fool. It hasn’t happened to me yet… but there’s still time.

This copper coin also piqued my interest. It’s something that has travelled through different people’s hands and pockets for over 200 years, so it carries a lot of history and that’s amazing.

This alabaster bust is wonderful, too. It’s beautifully finished and very well-rendered. I wasn’t even aware they made sculptures like this!

I’m also fascinated by cartography, so this early 19th century map instantly caught my eye. It’s unbelievable to think that somebody managed to draw, measure, walk, and ride, around Malta’s coastal perimeter and accurately put all their findings into a map like this – it’s quite amazing.

Finally, I went for this silver-plated-on-copper, pumpkin-shaped tea set. The quality of the set is superb. The finish, the indent of the pumpkin body, and the copper sheen are all very impressive. I assume it dates back to the 1900s and was made in Sheffield (known for their silver-plated-on-copper pieces). I’d happily have it on display in my home.

Great selection, Joseph. Did you pick any of your items with someone specific in mind?

I didn’t, actually. But I did ask my wife and daughter to pick some items for themselves! No room for error that way, you see. In fact, my wife chose this unique hedgehog thimble – she loves hedgehogs; they’re very dear to her heart.

Now we know this is a tricky question, but do you have a favourite item?

The joke box, definitely. If my granddaughter Beatrice was a bit older, I would have given it to her. But until then, I’ll keep it for myself…

How would you describe We Are Not A Shop to someone who doesn’t know about it?

Well, it’s the perfect way to get some Christmas shopping done without having to step into the shops! But apart from that, there’s a great selection of items on the website so you’re always bound to find something. It’s great fun!

Now, what do you like about the We Are Not A Shop concept?

The effort that’s put into the whole operation. I admire everyone involved because it’s a major commitment and it’s all for a good cause. The name is catchy, too!
