A fascinating and most unusual Victorian Key / Money / Valuables ‘Safe’ in the form of a wooden doorstop. This is one of those items from the past which prods the imagination into overtime! With round metal and wooden carrying handle and in pyramid form. Inside are 5 small drawers, all velvet lined and marked ‘Keys’ ‘Notes’ ‘Gold’ ‘Silver’ in descending order. Tucked to either side of the drawers are two small black leather-bound notebooks. H:24 x W:15 x D:15cm .

Description

One of the books is gold lettered Cash and Accounts on the spine and is blank apart from some lightly pencilled figures with a line through. The other has gold lettered Visits and Addresses on the spine and on the inside page is written in pen ‘From Maud J Lindsay October 6th 1883. Inside the back page is written in pencil ‘The Elements of N.T Greek By H.P.V Nunn Cambridge University Press. Originally would have locked, but sadly the key is missing. However, it’s fooled everyone who’s seen it, with no-one guessing it held valuables. A really unusual, fun and interesting piece and in beautiful condition. Possibly used by a housekeeper, shopkeeper
