JACQUI LOSCO, MODEL, AIR HOSTESS, CONTENT CREATOR & TV PRESENTER

By Fashion, Life & Style No Comments

“I love the fact that We Are Not A Shop offers such a wide range of pieces that you don’t find anywhere else. And it’s all for a good cause, too.”

You may recognize Jacqui Losco from her modelling work, TV appearances, or her Instagram, @jacquilosco. But you may have also spotted her on a plane, serving among the Air Malta cabin crew! Today, however, she’s sitting down with us to talk all things We Are Not A Shop. Find out what she selected from our online store, below.

Jacqui, thanks so much for joining us! Can you tell us a bit about the items you selected today and what drew you to them?

Sure. I was mainly drawn to pieces that reminded me of my childhood, and there are quite a few!

Firstly, I picked the apothecary’s box because it’s just so unique. I also happen to love things with small compartments – they’re so cute, and tiny!

This piece also instantly caught my eye. It’s essentially a fun ice-cream cone-shaped container to keep your baby’s first tooth in. I admit it’s sort of creepy, but also so sweet. I have lots of nephews and nieces, so I’m always on the lookout for baby-related things.

Then, I selected this cigarette holder because it’s so chic. It felt very 007 – which I loved growing up. I wasn’t allowed to watch them all of course, but I would try to look over my sister’s shoulder while she was watching them in the living room. Her thesis was on the 007 films and gender issues, so she watched them all for research. I just watched them for fun…

As you can tell from my voice, I’m a smoker, unfortunately. So that’s why I’ve gone for another smoking-related item. I just think old cigarette boxes like this one are so cool.

Then, I would really like to have a table lamp like this in my new place. The white coral feels so peaceful. And it’s not your everyday table lamp, either – it’s got a twist.

As for this backgammon set, my family owned a very similar one, which I would play with endlessly. I didn’t actually know how to play (and still don’t), but I would keep myself busy moving the pieces around. It belonged to my Nannu, so it’s sentimental I suppose.

This bunny fairy light was another blast from the past. As a child, I was obsessed with Peter Rabbit. My bedroom was full of bunnies and flowers! It brought back many memories.

Finally, I obviously had to pick this framed collection of cat cartoons – I’m a proud cat lady.

What will you be doing with your items?

I’ll probably put the backgammon set and apothecary’s box on display in my new living room.

What was your most surprising selection?

Probably the baby’s first tooth container. I don’t have any babies myself, but it seems like a sweet thing to have. You can pop it in your glass vetrina with the rest of the silverware.

Do you have a favourite section of the website?

Yes, the jewellery section.

What do you like about the We Are Not A Shop concept?

I love the fact that We Are Not A Shop offers such a wide range of pieces that you don’t find anywhere else. And it’s all for a good cause, too. Anyone visiting the website has the opportunity to purchase some truly beautiful items and donate to charity at the same time. That’s an amazing thing!

How would you describe We Are Not A Shop to someone who doesn’t know about it?

As a pleasantly surprising online shopping experience. When you visit the website, you’re bound to find something interesting. I could have picked many more items, but I had already exceeded my quota!

Would you recommend We Are Not A Shop to a friend?

I’ll recommend it to my friends, for sure. We’ll do a lot of damage…

LORINDA MAMO, LIFESTYLE BLOGGER, GRAPHIC DESIGNER & INTERDISCIPLINARY CREATIVE

By Fashion, Home Comforts, Life & Style No Comments

If you’re looking for original and thoughtful gift ideas, We Are Not A Shop is the online store for you. Particularly if you’re shopping for those tricky people who just seem to have everything – there’s bound to be something for them, too!

You may recognise Lorinda Mamo from her popular Instagram account @abirdwithafrenchfry, where she documents life with her son, Henry – a charismatic young man and survivor of PBS (prune belly syndrome), currently living with CKD (chronic kidney disease).

But Lorinda is also a graphic designer, blogger, interdisciplinary creative, and founder of HappyPlayCo – what can’t she do, right? Today, however, she’s taking a short break from her many jobs to sit down with us to discuss all things We Are Not A Shop. Find out what she had to say below.

Lorinda, we’re so glad you could join us. Could you talk us through some of the items you selected today?

Thank you for inviting me, I’m very excited to be here.

To kick things off, this book really caught my eye. I love homemade things, so this is right up my street. I wanted to crack open the pages as soon as I saw the cover.

Then, I picked this mystery puzzle box, because, frankly, I had seen it before and couldn’t stop thinking about it. It’s full of little details and intricacies which I find so magical.

This ring is beautiful, too. I don’t know what to say other than that it’s gorgeous. I’m really into my statement rings and this one finds a perfect balance between boldness and classic elegance.

I also must confess that I am big on stationery. I’ve been collecting stationery items since I was a young girl, so, when I saw these fun pencils, I simply had to have them. I’m a fan of their colour and the quotes written on them. From a graphic design perspective, I think the font is great, too. They’ll definitely bring a smile to my face the next time I’m writing out a to-do list.

I also picked this super elegant evening bag from your jewellery and fashion section. I recently had a gala event and had to scour most of Malta looking for a black evening bag – to no avail! This would have been perfect, though. It’s such a timeless piece which I can see myself wearing over and over again. I always prefer classic clothes to very trendy pieces, and this fits the bill.

Then, this music box instantly reminded me of my son, which is why I gravitated toward it. I sing this song to him myself, so it’s a bit sentimental I suppose.

Now, I’m admittedly not a huge makeup person, but this vintage powder and lipstick set was too gorgeous to leave behind. I mean, look at that impeccable mother of pearl detail.

My last item was this letter sealing set, which screamed out to me because of my love of stationery (which we’ve already established). It’s just fantastic. Why don’t people still seal letters this way?

Those are some great pieces, Lorinda. Now, what was your most surprising selection?

The mystery box! I’m still not entirely sure what’s inside it, so it’ll definitely be a surprise when I figure it out.

Did you have a favourite section of the website?

The curiosities section. There are just so many unique pieces I’d never seen before.

What do you like about the We Are Not A Shop concept?

Well, for starters, I love how well-curated the website is and the wide selection of items available. There really is something for everyone. There’s everything from quirky vintage greeting cards to exquisite jewellery, and even one-of-a-kind kids’ toys.

How would you describe We Are Not A Shop to someone who doesn’t know about it?

As a unique online concept where all the proceeds go to charity.

Buying from We Are Not A Shop is also very exciting because you know that all the items are one-of-a-kind. So, if you’re not quick to snatch something up, someone else might grab it before you!

Would you recommend We Are Not A Shop to a friend?

Absolutely. If you’re looking for original and thoughtful gift ideas, We Are Not A Shop is the online store for you. Particularly if you’re shopping for those tricky people who just seem to have everything – there’s bound to be something for them, too.

FRANCESCA MIFSUD, FOUNDER OF ISLAND BEBE

By Family, Fashion, Life & Style No Comments

Francesca Mifsud is the savvy business brain behind Island Bebe – the online parenting platform offering local information, inspiration, and guidance for local parents and child carers on the island. With Christmas just around the corner, we’re so happy Francesca found time to chat to us about her top We Are Not A Shop picks. Find out what she selected, below.

Francesca, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Since we’re all gearing up for Christmas, could you talk us through some of your favourite festive picks?

I’d love to. The first thing I spotted was this alphabet storybook, which would make the perfect Christmas gift for my son. This is his first proper Christmas (he’s only 15 months old) so he’s experiencing everything for the first time, and we’d like to make it as memorable as possible.

Then, I went for this dog shampoo – which is self-explanatory really. My dog’s a total princess so it felt appropriate. She’s a very chilled, lazy, Labrador and we constantly spoil her with 5-star treatment. She’ll definitely enjoy this.

I also love this Christmas wreath. I’ve been on the lookout for a wreath for a while, and this one instantly caught my eye. It’s a gorgeous colour and will look great hung on my front door.

I wasn’t planning on buying anything for the men in my life, but the man flu recovery kit seemed like an ideal, tongue-in-cheek, stocking filler. I couldn’t not get it.

This set of pearls is beautiful, too. The pieces on We Are Not A Shop are so classic and elegant, you can really wear them with anything.

Then, I’m constantly searching for stocking fillers for the family, so this Christmas mug was right up my street. After all, everyone needs a holiday mug, don’t they?

Finally, I selected this squeaky chicken for my dog (I told you she’s spoilt). My son is always stealing her toys so it’s only fair that I find her replacements. I chose this dog tag for her too. Not that she needs it; she never leaves our side!

Did you pick any items with someone specific in mind?

I did indeed. It’s hard not to when all I’ve been thinking about is Christmas shopping.

So, I picked the book for my son, the dog items for…my dog, the man flu recovery kit for my father, and, finally, the pearls for my mother. I think she’ll adore them.

We know this is a tough question, but do you have a favourite item?

It’s probably a tie between the wreath and the pearls.

We love those, too! And is there anything you would personally like to receive as a Christmas gift?

A day to sleep! Jokes aside, I’d have to say this pair of handcrafted earrings. I rarely treat myself to jewellery, but I wouldn’t say no to receiving them as a gift.

How would you describe We Are Not A Shop to someone who doesn’t know about it?

A unique place to find something different for the special people in your life.

Now, what do you like about the We Are Not A Shop concept?

That the products are so original – you really don’t find pieces like this everywhere. The website is wonderfully curated with a fantastic mix of items for anyone to enjoy. And I love the fact that it’s all for charity, of course.

Would you recommend We Are Not A Shop to a friend?

Yes, all day every day.

YANA AZZOPARDI, JEWELLERY DESIGNER & BUSINESS OWNER

By Fashion, Life & Style No Comments

Local designer Yana Azzopardi is the creative powerhouse behind Yana’s Jewellery. Since opening its doors back in 2012, the brand has launched three separate outlets and has grown to become one of Malta’s favourites for custom-made jewellery. Today, Yana’s taken the time out of her busy schedule to chat to us about her favourite We Are Not A Shop picks. Spoiler – she really does love jewellery.

Yana, we’re so pleased you could join us. Can you talk us through some of your favourite We Are Not A Shop pieces?

Of course. But before we get started, I have to say it’s probably no surprise that I’m obsessed with accessories, but it’s about to become even more obvious…

The first thing that caught my eye was this clutch bag. It’s a neutral colour so you can style it with anything, and I have the perfect earrings to pair it with.

Then, I thought these bangles were gorgeous. They remind me of Morocco (one of my favourite places), and I just love everything about them; the noises they make, the feel of them, and the mother of pearl detail, too!

I also thought this scarf was super cool. It’s another versatile piece that I can see myself wearing with a bunch of different outfits. It would also make a great Christmas gift because it’s appropriate for all ages.

I feel like this small wrist bag was made for me because I’m constantly losing things and could use a handy piece like this to keep everything in one place. I think my mum would also appreciate it as a gift, so maybe I’ll have to surprise her with it.

Then, I spotted this fun bag – another classic staple. You can take it on holiday, to the beach, or use it to jazz up any outfit.

Everyone needs a good clutch bag in their wardrobe, and I happen to have a few weddings coming up so this will certainly come in handy.

Finally, I always like to have a tote bag with me just in case I need to do a spot of shopping. They’re so convenient. They’re also great for carrying drinks to dinner parties or for getting gifts safely to a Christmas lunch!

Did you pick any items with someone specific in mind?

Not really. I added whatever caught my eye to my cart! That’s generally how I shop; I pick stuff I know I would love to receive myself, and then distribute accordingly. It does mean that I tend to want to keep everything though…

We know this is a tough question, but do you have a favourite item?

I think the bangles are my favourite. I wear a lot of jewellery, so…

How would you describe We Are Not A Shop to someone who doesn’t know about it?

It’s a charity-based online store with approachable online content, stylish products, and a varied selection of items. Plus, it’s all for a good cause!

Now, what do you like about the We Are Not A Shop concept?

I think it’s super interesting and unique – I don’t know of anything similar on the island!

I only found out about it recently, but I’ll definitely be back soon.

Would you recommend We Are Not A Shop to a friend?

Of course. Especially with Christmas around the corner; I’ll spread the word!

ASTRID VELLA, ENVIRONMENTAL NGO CO-FOUNDER

By Books & Reading, Fashion, Life & Style No Comments

You’ve probably spotted Astrid Vella on TV or in the news fighting for the environment on behalf of Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar (FAA – Together for a Better Environment). As co-founder of the organisation, Astrid has worked tirelessly to protect and safeguard Malta’s built and natural environment for the last 15 years. Today, we’re sitting down with her to discuss some of her favourite We Are Not A Shop picks.

Astrid, we’re so happy you took the time to chat to us today! Could you talk us through some of your favourite pieces?

I would love to. For starters, I love vintage costume jewellery; I once read “Women who wear real jewellery are rich, but those who wear costume jewellery are more interesting”, which is so true! The We Are Not A Shop website is a total treasure trove of all things vintage, so I was spoiled for choice in that department. I am particularly fond these earrings – I can’t wait to wear them.

Then, I just had to pick this gorgeous blue bottle from the 1930s. I’ve been collecting old-school soda bottles for a while now and this would make the perfect addition to my collection!

I also love suffragette jewellery and this piece was clearly inspired by the movement. Everything from the colours to the craftsmanship and the general feel of the piece are indicative of that era, so I couldn’t not have it.

Admittedly, I’m a sucker for any Malta-related books and these two instantly caught my eye. I actually studied Coleridge at University, so this book on his trip to Malta was a natural choice. Then, I was drawn to this one because I’ve always been fascinated by images of Valletta from the past. That’s probably because my mother was a Valletta girl through and through, and would often recount stories of the city to me as a child. I think the images in this book really encapsulate the essence of the Valletta, which is truly spectacular.

Finally, this handbag is both practical and fun. I can style it with anything and take it anywhere and everywhere: whether that’s to the beach on a hot summer’s day or to a more formal business meeting in the afternoon. It’s also the perfect size to store my tablet or other important day-to-day items – ultra convenient!

Great picks, Astrid! Did you pick any items with someone specific in mind?

Well, I find the website terrific for gifts for oversees friends and relatives. I’ve already sent these coasters to a friend abroad, and plan to send something else soon because they were a total hit!

The website has proven to be super convenient for finding Christmas presents for my (impossible-to-buy-for) husband, too. There’s such a vast selection of original items available that you’re bound to find something for anyone – even the most particular of people.

We know this is a tough question, but do you have a favourite item?

This pendant, which I’m definitely buying.

How would you describe We Are Not A Shop to someone who doesn’t know about it?

That’s easy: “A treasure trove of whimsical and original gems.”

That’s quite the description – we love it! Now, what do you like most about the We Are Not A Shop concept?

What’s not to like? At We Are Not A Shop, you can treat yourself and other to wonderful gifts while also helping preserve Malta’s heritage. Win, win!

Finally, would you recommend We Are Not A Shop to a friend?

Oh absolutely. Like a shot.

Check out Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar’s website for regular updates on their work preserving Malta’s built and natural heritage.

TINA MIFSUD, ARTIST & JEWELLERY CREATOR

By Fashion, Life & Style No Comments

You may well recognise Tina Mifsud as the young artist behind the exhibitions ‘Plajja’ and ‘Point of You’. However, besides being one of the islands’ most in-demand artists of the moment, she’s also found her way into the world of accessories: creating customisable jewellery for her brand, Tina’s Treasures, and functional belt pouches for Fold.

With a clear artistic vision and a strong eye for detail, we figured that Tina would be the perfect person to chat to about all things We Are Not A Shop. Read on to discover what she selected from our online store!

Tina, we’re so happy you could join us! So, let’s get started. What drew you to the items you selected today?

Firstly, I was instantly attracted to the Collectors’ Corner because of its wide range of antique and vintage pieces. All the items are so gorgeous and intricate – you just don’t find things like that nowadays.

I’m also really into my jewellery and am a sucker for a pop of colour, which is why I picked this chunky vintage yellow necklace. It’s a great statement piece that you can dress up or down to complete any outfit. I’d probably style it with some white and blue clothes/accessories – one of my favourite colour combos, especially as we round off the summer.

Then, I picked this poster because I’m doing up a property and have been on the hunt for the sort of quirky pieces that really make a home a home. I’m a fan of pop culture, the 60s, and frankly, anything retro, so this funky poster instantly caught my eye. And it has ‘Espagna’ written on it, so it felt like a sign. For context: I lived in Barcelona for a while, and it will forever hold a special place in my heart. Hence the sign…

Also, you can always find me sporting some gold jewellery, so these earrings were right up my street. The coloured crystal detail makes them extra special, too – the perfect accessory for a fancy occasion.

As an artist, I’ve always been fascinated by the Maltese landscape. Our rock formations, layered limestone, and salt pans are all so unique. In fact, limestone is going to feature quite heavily in my next exhibition, which is why I chose this book. Malta’s textures are such a prominent part of who and what we are that it’s hard not to draw inspiration from them.

Finally, this scent bottle is absolutely beautiful – I particularly love the metal detailing because the craftsmanship is so impressive. It also feels like something out of the 1920s and I can’t help but imagine the story behind it. Who owned this? Where has it been? That’s part of the magic of discovering these rare pieces, isn’t it? They have so much history.

Those are some great choices, Tina. Did you pick any of them with someone specific in mind?

Well, I’m very close to my sister and we bond over our shared appreciation of jewellery, so I can definitely see her sporting this necklace and earring combo.

Then, this small pill box instantly reminded me of my grandmother. Growing up, I specifically remember she had a different pill box for every day of the week, all with varying intricate designs. I definitely picked it with her in mind.

I also think my dad would be thrilled to receive this book as a gift. He works in real estate so he’s always looking out for new interior design trends.

We know this is a tough decision, but do you have a favourite item?

I’d have to say the earrings. They’re classy, valuable, and real gold– you can’t go wrong!

We couldn’t agree more. Could you tell us what you enjoyed most about your We Are Not A Shop experience?

I found the whole experience to be very personal. It’s clear all the items are very carefully selected and chosen with love, which is so rare. Everything is great quality, too, and it’s all for a good cause which makes it 10 times better.

Finally, would you recommend We Are Not A Shop to a friend?

Of course, 100 percent! I’ll be back soon myself…

Thank you for joining us, Tina! And good luck decorating your new home, we can’t wait to see how it turns out.

Tina is currently working on two exhibitions: the collaborative, all-female exhibition CURRENT/S II, which you can check out at Studio 104 St Lucia Street, Valletta, and her upcoming solo exhibition scheduled for next September.

TRAVELLING IN 2021: FIVE SIMPLE REASONS TO NURTURE YOUR WANDERLUST

By Books & Reading, Fashion, Life & Style, Travel No Comments

Wanderlust: a strong longing for or impulse toward wandering; the wish to travel far away and to many different places.

Travellers might have even more of a reason to want to hop on a plane this year and go off into a foreign wilderness after recent pandemic-related events. We can already imagine their fingers itching to press that ‘Book Tickets’ tab online and await the sweet escape.

If you were a lover of travel before everything got locked down, you’re probably dying to experience the local scenery of a country other than your own. To get you in the adventurous mood, here are some of the benefits of travelling!

IT’S BOTH PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY HEALTHY

Of course, when you’re travelling, you might be doing a lot of walking, perhaps far more than when you’re stuck in your own country at an office job. It’ll be tiring exercise, but worth it for your physical health in the long term, as studies have shown that travel can help reduce things like heart disease. Some fresh air and sunshine will also do a world of good.

This will have positive effects on your mental health, too. Taking a break from your life and escaping for a while is known to reduce anxiety, stress, and depression, and can help you disconnect, relax, rejuvenate, and reset from daily life.

SOME THINGS CAN ONLY BE EXPERIENCED IN PERSON

Admittedly, the internet has helped to make a lot of things easily available for everyone around the globe; we can share anything in a matter of seconds through social media. But that’s no alternative to actually being there. Sure, learning things through books and videos has its advantages, and you can certainly build up quite a database of information like that, but seeing a work of art in a museum as opposed to a book, or getting to walk through forests and mountains rather than just seeing them in documentaries, are vastly different experiences.

IT’LL MAKE YOU MORE INTELLIGENT

As with the previous point, there are certain things you’ll only be able to learn about and absorb in person. When it comes to a culture that’s different to yours, experiencing it first-hand can be infinitely mind-opening. You’ll be exposed to totally new things that’ll broaden your perspective on life. By building a tolerance for uncertainty, you’ll learn to just go with the flow and treat every day like it’s your last, living completely in the present.

As you can imagine, this will help you transform into a more interesting person with loads of great stories to tell about the delicacies you’ve tried, the languages you’ve learned, and the solid friendships and relationships you’ve built along the way. All of this will contribute to making your senses sharper and your mind more creative, and will also look attractive on a resume!

TRAVELLING ALONE WILL BUILD CONFIDENCE

Apart from the obvious advantages of travelling alone, such as getting to follow your own route and schedule, and avoiding pesky arguments about where to go and what to see, more than anything, it’ll help you learn to be more comfortable with your own company. This is something that an over-stimulated technological society has trouble with; we can rarely ever shut down and ‘do nothing’, away from mobiles and other such activities.

Learning to be alone and relying totally on yourself can be an extremely liberating feeling, providing a great, though often scary, opportunity for introspection and reflection. Getting out of your comfort zone can be difficult, but the rewards are endless.

IN THE END, YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO HAVE FUN!

Perhaps the whole point of travelling is that you’re opening yourself up to the world and saying: “Give me everything you’ve got.” While this isn’t to say that travelling is for everyone, human beings are, to a certain extent, naturally nomadic people, historically moving from one geographical region to another for any number of reasons.

Back in the 1800s, the Grand Tour was all the rage with the upper classes, the final stage in an adolescent’s worldly education. Nowadays, the relatively cheaper cost of tickets for any mode of transportation means that anyone can hop on a plane, boat, train, or car in a heartbeat and be in a completely different time-zone in a few hours. If nothing else, it’s a celebration of the wonderful advancements in technology that allow for all this to happen!

And, at the end of the day, seeing how others live their lives can also help you cherish your own more. Nothing will make you appreciate coming back to your home sweet home than a long trip away from it all.

CATHERINE WICKER, FRENCH EXPAT & INTERIOR DESIGN LOVER

By Books & Reading, Books and reading, Family, Fashion No Comments

French expat and interior design lover Catherine Wicker has a keen eye for detail and the finer things in life. Today, we’re chatting to her about her top We Are Not a Shop pick!

Hey Catherine! We’re so glad you decided to sit down with us for a chat. Could you tell us about some of your favourite items from We Are Not a Shop?

For starters, these earrings are absolutely delightful. Elegant and unique – you don’t find earrings like these everywhere.

Bumblebee brilliance.

We Are Not a Shop is also my go-to spot when I am hunting for greeting cards in Malta. They have a wonderful variety of original ones, perfect for any occasion.

Traditional beauty and timeless design. This paper fan greeting card sits atop an intricate Venetian drawnwork lace handkerchief.

I truly love the whole buying experience at We Are Not a Shop. There’s such a fantastic mixture of chic, vintage items and more contemporary pieces (like this stunning necklace, for instance). You can’t go wrong.

I like my eggs hanging from my neck and covered in precious gems. How about you?

Great choices! You mentioned you’ve purchased items from We Are Not a Shop before, so what do you like about shopping here?

Well, why wouldn’t you want to shop here?! All the proceeds go to charity, and their pieces are carefully selected and provide great value for your money. It’s an all-round satisfying experience for everyone.

Together with the Autumn Flowers & Leaves Cushion in the background, Catherine selected an aloe vera and grapefruit hand sanitiser gel from Stephen Cordina. Support local and stay safe – win win!

Have you selected any of your items with someone specific in mind?

A few, definitely. I can completely imagine myself reading the ‘Gathering of the Little Rabbit’ to my grandchildren, or gifting any one of these lovely cards to a friend or loved one.

Emma Thomson’s Felicity Wishes Sparkling Sticker Book provides the perfect entertainment for you…we mean your grandchildren, of course.
Some of the charming greeting cards selected by Catherine (Turning into My Mother and Cloud-Watching Rabbits), along with a white ceramic oval bowl with a pink-eared rabbit standing guard.

And I would probably pick this fan for myself. Summer in Malta is definitely on the warmer side (to say the least!), so you can never have enough fans. And this one is simply gorgeous!

Fan your worries away, in style.

Finally, which item would you most like to receive as a gift?

Ah, I couldn’t possibly choose! Can I have all of them? I’ve actually already bought this tea towel – I couldn’t resist it. And I may have also purchased this greeting card and given it to a friend of mine… what can I say? I did pick them after all!

Showing a charcoal sketch by Jean Bartholomew, this is an original greeting card for any occasion.
Your everyday kitchen essential, but cuter.

Thanks for chatting to us, Catherine!

HOW TO KEEP YOUR JEWELLERY LOOKING GREAT IN SUMMER

By Collecting, Fashion No Comments

To accompany We Are Not a Shop’s recent campaign of summer jewellery, we thought it would be beneficial to do our research and bring you the best advice there is on how to keep your jewellery looking great during these hot months. So, without further ado, here are the most important things to keep in mind when it comes to protecting your jewellery.

SAND SCRATCHES

When going to the beach, be careful about exposing your jewellery to sand. Since sand is essentially just little pieces of rough dirt, some of your jewellery – especially gemstones – can get scratched.

SUNSCREEN DAMPENS

While it’s always advisable to apply sunscreen to your body to protect yourself from harmful UV rays, it’s best to keep it away from your jewellery, as it can coat gemstones and significantly reduce their shine. If you get any sunscreen on your jewellery, be sure to clean them regularly.

OTHER ELEMENTS

This also goes for sea salt, chlorine (which can discolour gold and platinum, as well as erode a gemstone’s polish), sweat, bug spray, and long exposure to the sun. If you know you’re going to spend long periods of time in the vicinity of any chemicals or abrasives, be wise about which jewellery you decide to wear.

Protect your valuables while relaxing at the beach by hiding them in this Tansafe Beach Safe, a curious little invention that’s designed to look like an ordinary bottle of sunblock.

PRISTINE PEARLS

That being said, pearls, which are vulnerable in excessive heat, can actually benefit from sweat. Pearls are porous, and the moisture from our skins can keep them lubricated, maintaining their lustre, and thus preventing them from drying out and cracking. However, this doesn’t apply to everything. Turquoise and coral are also porous, but, in the case of the former, exposure to the body’s natural oils can cause darkening.

CAREFUL CLEANING

When you’re not wearing your jewellery, wipe after every use. Clean with a mild soap diluted with water for a deep cleaning (though this will probably never replace professional cleaning services offered by jewellers) and store them in a clean, dry place. For silver jewellery, store them with anti-tarnish strips or even silica packets. This will take any lingering moisture away if they’ve been exposed to water, preventing the silver from tarnishing or rusting.

SAFE STORAGE

While you’re at it, not all jewellery should be stored in the same place. For example, keep diamonds away from pearls, as the diamonds could end up scratching the pearls. Keep individual items in separate cloth bags, or you could even invest in a luxurious fabric box to prevent scratches all around.

Store your jewellery safely in this gorgeous handmade 1950s jewellery box, made from wood and covered in green velvet and floral-themed fabric.

BE WARY OF BRASS

Brass jewellery tends to leave a green residue on the skin after long periods of contact. While not a health hazard, it does look rather unsightly. Luckily, any brass jewellery available at We Are Not a Shop is plated in either silver or gold to avoid any public embarrassments.

ALWAYS INSURE

When you’re travelling abroad and taking valuable jewellery with you, make sure that it’s insured and that your hotel room stores a safety deposit box. It’s also wise to take a selfie of yourself wearing the jewellery as proof that it was in your possession during the trip.

HOT & COLD

When it comes to ring jewellery, remember that fingers swell in the heat, which can make wearing them uncomfortable or even painful. What’s more, once you go for a quick plunge in the sea to cool off, the cold water will cause your fingers to shrink, putting you at risk of your rings slipping off.

MAXINE AQUILINA, ACTRESS & MALTA’S GOT TALENT JUDGE

By Collecting, Family, Fashion No Comments

Actress and Malta’s Got Talent judge Maxine Aquilina is currently doing up her new house and is on the hunt for items that will make it feel like home – including the sort of vintage pieces she can’t resist. This is her pick of We Are Not a Shop favourites!

Hi Maxine! Thanks for joining us at We Are Not a Shop. You’ve picked some fabulous items. Which are your favourites?

This Cautionary Tales for Children storybook certainly stands out; it’s brilliant! Storytelling has always fascinated me, even more so now that I am studying Play Therapy. These moral stories are marvellous and really good fun. I have to admit they are a bit gruesome but I am captivated by them!

“I’m studying play therapy and great stories fascinate me – including these ones!”

I also love this French fashion newspaper – Le Petit Echo De La Mode, from 30th May 1948. The art nouveau style really stands out to me, and I can imagine having a framed copy of this in my home. Perhaps I’ll start a collection!

“Vintage French fashion is my favourite. What a fabulous find!”

Finally, I had to pick this souvenir booklet of Maltese photos; ‘Souvenir de Malta’ – a rare and vintage concertina photo fold-out. I love looking through old photos of Malta but have never seen so many of these and they are so precious. It reminds me of an old-style fold-out photo album, the likes of which I haven’t had since I was little. It’s amazing! A must-have for any collector of Maltese memorabilia.

“These photos are stunning. What incredible pictures of Malta. I could spend hours looking through them.”

We couldn’t agree more! Great choices. And what do you think about We Are Not a Shop in general?

I really like it! I have been so impressed by the incredible selection of gifts, including lots of things that you can’t usually find on the island. The fact that every cent goes to charity is brilliant. It couldn’t be a better mix and should be the first place anyone in Malta goes to if they need a gift. It’s a win-win!

For this handwrapped pink quartz and gold wire bracelet, Maxine said: “This would be a treat to myself! It’s so pretty.”

Did you pick any of your items today with someone in mind?

Absolutely! My fiancé Adrian is a huge fan of vintage and antique items, so he’d love lots of the things on We Are Not a Shop. That said, I can think of hundreds of people I would like to gift things to here! I could spend hours trawling through them. I normally have to travel to find items as unusual and exciting as these, but can now find everything from the comfort of my own home. What a fantastic concept!

One such item is this silver beaded Laura Ashley cushion: “I love a bit of sparkle! This would make a great addition to our new decor.”

And this white outdoor lantern with a wax candle, too: “This will look so pretty in our garden.”

Finally, which item would you most like to receive yourself?

It’s a tie! I can’t choose between the 1940s-style turban, which I would love to wear this summer, and the photo album. Maybe I’ll just have to have both!

“I’m definitely having this! What a great style to wear this summer.”
