HERE’S WHY YOU SHOULD START WRITING BY HAND AGAIN

By Books & Reading, Collecting No Comments

We’re living in technological times, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Think of all the great things that have emerged as a result of this. But there are some negative effects that need to be considered. One such symptom is the apparent decrease in handwriting, both the actual writing of it, and its aesthetic appreciation. Schools are favouring the use of tablets over pen and paper, and the teaching of cursive calligraphy is all but lost. This is not only sad in terms of the historical appreciation of handwriting, but also worrying in relation to the well-known health benefits of maintaining it.

Because we like doing things the old-fashioned way and believe in time-honoured traditions, we thought we’d highlight some of the best reasons you should try your best to preserve your handwriting in the 21st century, as well as featuring some items from We Are Not a Shop that will help you in this seemingly outdated endeavour!

IT STRENGTHENS YOUR MEMORY

More and more frequently, students at university are relying on typing their lecture notes into a laptop verbatim, with the idea that everything needs to be remembered. However, studies have shown that students taking notes by hand remember the material more than those who type. While this might sound like a generalisation, handwriting uses specific fine motor skills (which are also essential to cognitive development in children) that aids long-term memory recall.

To get back into writing by hand, find inspiration in Shaun Usher’s “Letters of Note” and “More Letters of Note”, collecting entertaining correspondence from around the globe.

IT MAKES YOU MORE CREATIVE

The patience required to write by hand in comparison to the relative speed of typing results in sharpened critical thinking and a stronger conceptual understanding. This ties into the previous point: if you’re taking notes in a lecture, you’re obviously going to be recording material at a slower pace, so your brain has no choice but to prioritise the most essential information. At the same time, you’ll be enhancing your focus and learning comprehension skills.

Speaking of being creative, take a look at this fascinating 3D flower stand pop-up card!

IT CAN HELP PREVENT MENTAL DISEASE

The advantage of memory improvement could also keep certain mental diseases at bay. The particular way in which handwriting keeps the brain active could help prevent the onset of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Practicing cursive handwriting has also been known to help hand-eye coordination in those individuals suffering from dyslexia, which is caused by a division between the auditory and language centres of the brain.

Preserve cherished memories of places you’ve been by taking casual notes on the back of photograph cards, like this gorgeous one featuring a poppy field.

IT’S AN EXTENSION OF YOUR PERSONALITY

Throughout one lifetime, you’re bound to experience several character changes, which will in turn affect your handwriting. Indeed, handwriting is a pure expression of what your current personality is like. Nowadays, we refer to graphology, the analysis of particular shapes in one’s handwriting. For example, if you write in rounded letters, it might mean you lean more towards being creative and artistic. On the other hand, if you write in pointed letters, you might be a more intense and curious individual.

The fact that your handwriting is a part of you makes handwritten notes to loved ones all the more special, as your unique self-expression, and the effort put into making it, immediately turns a simple note into a special keepsake. Think of how timeless a handwritten letter turns out to be! This is something that can’t really be achieved by ordinary computer typefaces.

Don’t let appearances fool you: these paper fans are actually greeting cards!

THERE’S A TACTILE PLEASURE TO IT

A return to paper allows a connection that’s impossible to have when using a keyboard. Writing by hand is thought to be an extremely holistic activity; just as there is a connection between acquiring better reading and writing skills (the two go hand in hand), there is a physical aspect to putting pen to paper in order to form words and sentences.

Making your own mark on a piece of paper means there’s a very human element to it, something that you just don’t get when typing on a keyboard, where it’s almost too easy to delete what you’ve written. Editing on a screen can interfere with the organic flow of one’s train of thought, where you can take your time choosing the right word, while your brain decides what it thinks is the most fundamental thing to write.

We’re really taken with these small notebooks that have real pressed flowers preserved in them. Carry a bit of nature around with you with these practical keepsakes.

IT MAKES A STATEMENT

Returning to handwriting is also a great way of rejecting the hustle and bustle of 21st-century technological existence. In a world that’s become obsessed with self-improvement, and where society keeps pushing us to work faster and more efficiently, it can be considerably relaxing to return to an activity that requires a more patient rhythm. The keyword here is “slower”, and that’s not a bad thing!

Writing by hand could also result in avoiding online distractions, as it’s just you, your writing instrument, and a notebook, as opposed to the temptation of countless tabs opened on a word browser.

You’ll certainly make a statement by adding these antique inkwells to your writing desk!

YOU’LL BE ABLE TO READ HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS

Aesthetically, handwriting can also be an infinitely rewarding pastime. Apart from great penmanship being incredibly satisfying to look at, having an understanding of, for example, cursive handwriting means you’ll be able to appreciate historical documents.

These would have been written at a time when the main writing tool was a quill pen, which had to be laboriously dipped into an ink pot numerous times. Apparently, cursive handwriting was invented as a way of having to lift the pen from the paper as little as possible, since all the letters are connected. How efficient!

Become obsessed with the beauty and discipline of calligraphy with Ahmed Moustafa and Stefan Sperl’s “The Cosmic Script: Sacred Geometry and the Science of Arabic Penmanship”.

MANY FAMOUS WRITERS STILL USE HANDWRITTEN DRAFTS

If you still aren’t convinced about the benefits of handwriting, rest assured that some of the most brilliant minds still use handwriting to draft out their original ideas in lieu of a computer. Academy Award-winning director Quentin Tarantino initially writes out the script for a new film project by hand in a notebook, and then proceeds to edit with a marker. Philosopher Susan Sontag preferred the necessary slowness handwriting afforded. Truman Capote handwrote his novel drafts, followed by a complete revision on his typewriter. Joyce Carol Oates writes her short stories out by hand as well. Stephen King and J.K. Rowling have also contemplated the benefits of writing novels by hand.

Furthermore, let’s not forget that, before the invention of the typewriter, human beings had no choice but to write everything out by hand. Think of the epic tomes of literature, thousands upon thousands of pages, which have been written out entirely by hand!

Get started on that letter or novel idea with this antique Victorian propelling pencil.

JOURNALING CAN BE THERAPEUTIC

Writing your unexpressed thoughts out into a diary or journal is known to relieve stress, depression, and anxiety. Handwriting provides a sense of calm similar to that of meditation, in that you’re forced to take it slow, gradually introducing yourself to the pages. Just as one might repeat a comforting mantra to oneself, taking the time and effort to construct letters by hand can have numerous health benefits. As such, writing can be a deeply intimate and personal activity.

HOW TO HOST THE PERFECT SUMMER PARTY

By Collecting, Family No Comments

Hosting summer events can be a daunting prospect for anyone. There’s the organising of whom to invite and what food to prepare, and making sure that everyone has a good time and doesn’t walk away feeling like they’ve just wasted a perfectly good summer’s day.

We Are Not a Shop’s affordable practical items can transform you from looking like a rookie party planner to a seasoned soiree bon vivant. Let’s take a look at some of the most important things to consider when planning summer entertainment for any time of the day, and how We Are Not a Shop’s stock can make the whole process less tortuous.

PICK A THEME

You’ll automatically make things easier for yourself if know what kind of party you’re throwing and focus on maintaining that particular theme. Certain items will add to the overall aesthetic you’re trying to execute. For example, couple these coconut bowls with this collectors’ Thai bamboo cutlery set, a pair of glass bamboo hurricane lamps in light and dark green (just pop a candle in them!), and a wicker holder with a candle to achieve an overall exotic look.

For something a little more on the elegant side, you can write out place names on cards. These place cards covered in either deep pink and blush wild roses or pink rambling roses and berries would look great among a flower-strewn scenario. You can also turn place cards into a fun game by using these Table Talk Place Cards, containing meaningful questions to get the conversation going.

It goes without saying that you should follow the weather forecast obsessively if you’re planning on having an outdoor garden party and don’t have appropriate shelter!

SEND OUT INVITES

How else are your family and friends going to find out about it?! Nowadays, environmental concerns have prompted people to opt for paperless invites, which have recently become all the rage. You’re sure to find a number of sites out there that offer charming templates for sending out your invite emails!

PLAN YOUR MENU & TABLEWARE

Support your local community by ordering supplies from small, family-run businesses. Above all, make sure you stock up on whatever you’re serving, as you don’t want to be caught in the embarrassing situation of not having anything else to serve your guests! It’s always best to keep the menu simple and wide-ranging, obviously taking any preferences and allergies into consideration.

Depending on the kind of eating style you’ve opted for, buffet or otherwise, the way you present your table spread is of the essence. This could consist of both food and floral décor, along with your chosen tableware.

Start off by offering appetisers and refreshing cocktails. Better yet, if it’ll help your theme, use these retro mason drinking jars for an eclectic effect. We absolutely adore these Moroccan tea glasses, all of which come with a recipe for fresh mint tea! Couple them with these vintage art deco tea glass holders for a particularly striking look.

Keep things looking light with these country house-style jugs, which you can use for your fresh beverages, and some quirky napkin rings. You can also support a local artist – Joanne Pace – who donated some of her beautiful pottery dishes!

Lay your table with these colourful cotton tablecloths. Present food on these spectacular tin plates in tobacco leafGoodge violet, and gold butterfly.

These oversized napkins featuring vibrant pink wild rose sprigs on a beige background will add a touch of glamour, while you can mix and match our range of fine napkin rings, consisting of vintage ones, others with decorative metal bows, or even a whole collection with Maltese crosses!

For a truly sophisticated look, continue adding to your tableware collection with We Are Not a Shop‘s stunning silverware, including silver (or silver-plated) wine coasters, vegetable dishes, and even a dish in the shape of a shell!

CULTIVATE AMBIENCE

Atmosphere is everything, so think in terms of sight, sound, and smell. Compile a music playlist for some subtle or fun background music to fill in those awkward silences. Luckily, We Are Not a Shop have plenty of CDs to choose from!

Make sure that everyone feels right at home by rearranging furniture and creating a comfortable lounge area, which you can decorate with lots of different summer cushions, including these nautical-themed ones.

Remember that uncluttered surroundings will make the environment a more pleasant one, as there would be less stuff for the eye to focus on, thus giving the brain a chance to wind down and rest. Opt for soft, warm lighting by choosing from our range of candles (including ones that come in cute little transparent jars, and even battery-operated one!) and other forms of lighting.

Drape these pink flower fairy lights around some fixtures. You can also go crazy with We Are Not a Shop‘s incredible range of artificial flower (which you can arrange using Mark Welford’s and Stephen Wick’s Flower Arranging: How to Arrange Flowers from Your Florist and Your Garden) in case you don’t want to have to stay worrying about actually taking care of your plants.

One interesting tip we learned of recently was throwing aromatic herbs on your charcoal barbecue, which will help disseminate the scent around the vicinity. And, of course, who can do without a Genevieve Lethu hammock if you’ve got the space for it?

ORGANISE FUN ACTIVITIES

Designate an entertainment area in case children will be at the party – we can’t pretend that they’re going to be interested in what the older generations have to talk about! Incorporate fun conversational activities for the adults, too. We’re all young at heart, after all…or at least need to be reminded of that. Create a backyard dance floor, and then round off the evening by watching a film together.

KEEP INSECTS AT BAY

Nothing ruins a summer party like flies and mosquitoes. We recommend this citronella candle cradled delicately in a terracotta pot, so it looks great while getting the job done. If you’ve only got a few friends over, you could even make things more intriguing by investing in a good mosquito net, which can be used both indoors and outdoors. Decorate it with some fairy lights and cushions, and you’ve got a veritable children’s fort or ‘60s-style conversation pit. How nostalgic!

GIFT PARTY FAVOURS

Make sure everyone has a safe way of getting home; if the evening turned particularly boozy, it would be very considerate to have taxis ordered for those who need them. To send your guests home graciously, a small gift basket for them to take home goes a long way in showing that you’re an amazing host and that their company was truly appreciated.

Figure out what little snacks and trinkets you want to gift (you can never go wrong with a nice candlediffuser, or handmade soap, all of which can be found in our Soaps & Fragrances section), anything from our Temptations section, and perhaps leave a small heartfelt message on these seed paper notes (seeds are literally embedded in the paper!). You could also check out Deborah Schneebeli-Morrell’s and Gloria Nicol’s Country Crafts Through the Seasons for some DIY ideas.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR JEWELLERY LOOKING GREAT IN SUMMER

By Collecting, Fashion No Comments

To accompany We Are Not a Shop’s recent campaign of summer jewellery, we thought it would be beneficial to do our research and bring you the best advice there is on how to keep your jewellery looking great during these hot months. So, without further ado, here are the most important things to keep in mind when it comes to protecting your jewellery.

SAND SCRATCHES

When going to the beach, be careful about exposing your jewellery to sand. Since sand is essentially just little pieces of rough dirt, some of your jewellery – especially gemstones – can get scratched.

SUNSCREEN DAMPENS

While it’s always advisable to apply sunscreen to your body to protect yourself from harmful UV rays, it’s best to keep it away from your jewellery, as it can coat gemstones and significantly reduce their shine. If you get any sunscreen on your jewellery, be sure to clean them regularly.

OTHER ELEMENTS

This also goes for sea salt, chlorine (which can discolour gold and platinum, as well as erode a gemstone’s polish), sweat, bug spray, and long exposure to the sun. If you know you’re going to spend long periods of time in the vicinity of any chemicals or abrasives, be wise about which jewellery you decide to wear.

Protect your valuables while relaxing at the beach by hiding them in this Tansafe Beach Safe, a curious little invention that’s designed to look like an ordinary bottle of sunblock.

PRISTINE PEARLS

That being said, pearls, which are vulnerable in excessive heat, can actually benefit from sweat. Pearls are porous, and the moisture from our skins can keep them lubricated, maintaining their lustre, and thus preventing them from drying out and cracking. However, this doesn’t apply to everything. Turquoise and coral are also porous, but, in the case of the former, exposure to the body’s natural oils can cause darkening.

CAREFUL CLEANING

When you’re not wearing your jewellery, wipe after every use. Clean with a mild soap diluted with water for a deep cleaning (though this will probably never replace professional cleaning services offered by jewellers) and store them in a clean, dry place. For silver jewellery, store them with anti-tarnish strips or even silica packets. This will take any lingering moisture away if they’ve been exposed to water, preventing the silver from tarnishing or rusting.

SAFE STORAGE

While you’re at it, not all jewellery should be stored in the same place. For example, keep diamonds away from pearls, as the diamonds could end up scratching the pearls. Keep individual items in separate cloth bags, or you could even invest in a luxurious fabric box to prevent scratches all around.

Store your jewellery safely in this gorgeous handmade 1950s jewellery box, made from wood and covered in green velvet and floral-themed fabric.

BE WARY OF BRASS

Brass jewellery tends to leave a green residue on the skin after long periods of contact. While not a health hazard, it does look rather unsightly. Luckily, any brass jewellery available at We Are Not a Shop is plated in either silver or gold to avoid any public embarrassments.

ALWAYS INSURE

When you’re travelling abroad and taking valuable jewellery with you, make sure that it’s insured and that your hotel room stores a safety deposit box. It’s also wise to take a selfie of yourself wearing the jewellery as proof that it was in your possession during the trip.

HOT & COLD

When it comes to ring jewellery, remember that fingers swell in the heat, which can make wearing them uncomfortable or even painful. What’s more, once you go for a quick plunge in the sea to cool off, the cold water will cause your fingers to shrink, putting you at risk of your rings slipping off.

KATIA CAMILLERI, INTERIOR DESIGN CONTENT CREATOR & HOME DÉCOR FIEND

By Collecting, Life & Style, Uncategorised No Comments

This week, interior design content creator and home décor fiend Katia Camilleri (@houseteneighteen) is sitting down with us to discuss her top We Are Not a Shop picks.

Hey Katia, thanks for joining us! Can you tell us what We Are Not a Shop items caught your eye today?

Since my Instagram page revolves around interior design, I was on the hunt for some quirky trinkets and functional pieces for the home. So when I saw the items in the Collectors’ Corner, I was sold!

I just love the whole ‘old meets new’ aesthetic and can totally imagine decorating my own house with a number of We Are Not a Shop pieces.

Add some Greek goddess glam with this white alabaster and cast marble bust of the Greek goddess Artemis. Also featured is a velvet cushion with roses and a snail. Handmade, vintage, and just plain gorgeous.

We couldn’t agree more. So, what do you like most about the We Are Not a Shop concept?

I love how unique it is – I actually can’t think of any other shops on the island with a similar set-up, and that’s great!

Also, I really enjoy finding vintage items and giving them a new lease of life. We Are Not a Shop is the perfect place to discover them. The fact that all sale proceeds go to charity just makes it all the more appealing.

Have you selected any of your items with someone specific in mind?

Yes, actually! My mother loves jewellery and vintage pieces (probably even more than I do), so I would definitely gift her any of the items I selected today. Similarly, my grandpa is really into antiques (you can see where I get it from), so I would happily surprise him with this cigarette dispenser or even this classic trinket box.

Take a step back in time with this vintage cigarette holder.
No smoke, no problem. This hand-carved soap stone ashtray is the perfect ornament for your coffee table (even if you don’t actually need it).
A teeny-tiny trinket.

Lastly, are there any items you would want to receive as a gift, and why?

It would have to be this gorgeous teacup set. They’re super original and I can already picture them on display in my dining room – a little vintage touch!

A spot of art deco décor never hurt anyone. Katia admires one of a vintage set of art deco silver-plated tea glass holders. Also featured in the background is a Spanish recycled glass bottle for your next dinner fiesta.

These books are also great – entertaining and decorative. You can use them as coffee table books or simply stack them to create a stylish interior feature.

19th-century botanical literature for your bookcase.

Finally, these handles would be ideal for an upcycled chest of drawers in a nursery. I’ve got it all planned out!

Add a vintage touch to your latest interior design project with these aged elephant handles.
We might see these child’s Noah’s ark bookends in Katia’s future upcycled nursery.

We love these handy design tips, Katia, and we can’t wait to see how you incorporate your We Are Not a Shop picks into your home!

Talk about a statement piece! This OKA Ornamenta-range faux antler magnifying glass is a great example of Katia’s preferred ‘old meets new’ aesthetic.

LUKE MICALLEF, ANTIQUE COLLECTOR & VINTAGE AFICIONADO

By Collecting, Life & Style No Comments

Antique collector and vintage aficionado, Luke Micallef, can’t resist a rare find with a bit of personality. Today, he’s talking us through some of his top We Are Not a Shop picks.

Hey Luke! We hear you’re quite the We Are Not a Shop fan – thanks for the support! Why did you choose these particular items today?

As I was going through the WANAS website, this vintage Napier Chinoiserie-inspired charm bracelet instantly caught my eye. It’s made out of little lanterns – what’s not to love? It’s stunning – a definite collector’s item.

Surprise a loved one with this unique piece.

I also picked this gorgeous malachite art deco Czechoslovakian vase. They just don’t make them like this anymore!

Another item for your mantel piece. The more the merrier, right?

Finally, I’m so glad I selected this signed numbered Graham Rust print. Seeing it in person, you could easily mistake it for an actual drawing, which makes it the perfect addition to any feature wall.

“It looks just like a real painting!”
This collection of six F. Edward Hulme botanical prints from 1890 would make a great addition to a feature wall.

Great choices! Could you tell us what you love most about We Are Not a Shop in general?

Well, for starters, all the items at We Are Not a Shop clearly have a story behind them, and that makes them extra special. I actually came across the shop by accident but quickly found myself browsing the website, getting attached to some pieces and thinking: “I will not rest until I have these!” I also love the fact that all the proceeds go to a good cause, so you don’t have to feel guilty about spending that little bit extra.

Pretty perfection. Treat yourself to this vintage silver brooch with a light aquamarine stone and paste surround.
The Lachrymatory Teardrop Glass Scent Bottle (left) and Tibetan Jade Snuff Bottle (right) are beautiful pieces all on their own.

Who would you recommend We Are Not a Shop to?

We Are Not a Shop is ideal for anyone looking for a gift – there’s something for everyone. In fact, I was on the lookout for a present for my mother because she’s a collector too.

Quirky, cute, and oh-so-dainty, these vintage small unmatched dishes would make a thoughtful gift.

I have to admit, shopping here can be a bit of a struggle because I can never decide which piece to buy first! I’m always conflicted between wanting to buy things for myself and gifting them to friends and family. But, of course, there are worse problems for a collector to have!

Spice up your tux with these interesting raw amethyst cufflinks.

On that note, is there a particular item you would you most want to receive as a gift from We Are Not a Shop?

Ah, that’s really difficult because there are so many! Everything on this site has that little ‘something’ that I love. I’d probably have to say this French blue seltzer soda syphon, since I’ve recently started a little glass collection for myself (so it’s only fitting).

A new item for your mantel piece.

Thanks Luke! We love that you’re such a fan of the site – thanks so much for getting the word out there. Happy shopping!

Popcorn and a DVD, anyone? Luke chose one of his favourite films, ‘Miss Potter’ (2006), from We Are Not a Shop‘s aesthetic film range.

MAXINE AQUILINA, ACTRESS & MALTA’S GOT TALENT JUDGE

By Collecting, Family, Fashion No Comments

Actress and Malta’s Got Talent judge Maxine Aquilina is currently doing up her new house and is on the hunt for items that will make it feel like home – including the sort of vintage pieces she can’t resist. This is her pick of We Are Not a Shop favourites!

Hi Maxine! Thanks for joining us at We Are Not a Shop. You’ve picked some fabulous items. Which are your favourites?

This Cautionary Tales for Children storybook certainly stands out; it’s brilliant! Storytelling has always fascinated me, even more so now that I am studying Play Therapy. These moral stories are marvellous and really good fun. I have to admit they are a bit gruesome but I am captivated by them!

“I’m studying play therapy and great stories fascinate me – including these ones!”

I also love this French fashion newspaper – Le Petit Echo De La Mode, from 30th May 1948. The art nouveau style really stands out to me, and I can imagine having a framed copy of this in my home. Perhaps I’ll start a collection!

“Vintage French fashion is my favourite. What a fabulous find!”

Finally, I had to pick this souvenir booklet of Maltese photos; ‘Souvenir de Malta’ – a rare and vintage concertina photo fold-out. I love looking through old photos of Malta but have never seen so many of these and they are so precious. It reminds me of an old-style fold-out photo album, the likes of which I haven’t had since I was little. It’s amazing! A must-have for any collector of Maltese memorabilia.

“These photos are stunning. What incredible pictures of Malta. I could spend hours looking through them.”

We couldn’t agree more! Great choices. And what do you think about We Are Not a Shop in general?

I really like it! I have been so impressed by the incredible selection of gifts, including lots of things that you can’t usually find on the island. The fact that every cent goes to charity is brilliant. It couldn’t be a better mix and should be the first place anyone in Malta goes to if they need a gift. It’s a win-win!

For this handwrapped pink quartz and gold wire bracelet, Maxine said: “This would be a treat to myself! It’s so pretty.”

Did you pick any of your items today with someone in mind?

Absolutely! My fiancé Adrian is a huge fan of vintage and antique items, so he’d love lots of the things on We Are Not a Shop. That said, I can think of hundreds of people I would like to gift things to here! I could spend hours trawling through them. I normally have to travel to find items as unusual and exciting as these, but can now find everything from the comfort of my own home. What a fantastic concept!

One such item is this silver beaded Laura Ashley cushion: “I love a bit of sparkle! This would make a great addition to our new decor.”

And this white outdoor lantern with a wax candle, too: “This will look so pretty in our garden.”

Finally, which item would you most like to receive yourself?

It’s a tie! I can’t choose between the 1940s-style turban, which I would love to wear this summer, and the photo album. Maybe I’ll just have to have both!

“I’m definitely having this! What a great style to wear this summer.”
