Tinker’s Mufti Memoirs Of A Part Time Soldier By Basil Peacock

Minimum Donation €9.00

Pre-owned. Major Basil Peacock is well known, through his broadcasts, to most people in the north of England. His autobiography deserves to gain him many new friends throughout the country. By origin the son of a Tyneside shopkeeper, by profession a dentist, Major Peacock’s background does not at first strike one as the mould in which heroes are cast. But Major Peacock, as his rank implies, was also a soldier. He was also a very unusual soldier. Having joined the army, under-age, in 1916, he ended up with a commission, an MC and six months in a German prisoner-of-war camp. Twenty-three years later, we find him, still an infantry officer, his pip having become a crown, as a prisoner of the Japs on the infamous Kwai Railway.
With gratitude, humour and no regrets Major Peacock tells the remarkable story of his life. His endearing modesty only serves to emphasise the extraordinary career of this very unusual Northumbrian. The photographs on the jacket of Major Peacock with his two brothers were taken in 1915 and 1970. In very good condition. Price clipped dustjacket with some sunning. A little tanning to edges and pages. Hardcover. Published by Seeley 1974
