Arthur Christopher Benson was an English essayist, poet and academic and the 28th Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge. He wrote the lyrics of Edward Elgar’s Coronation Ode including the words of the song “Land of Hope and Glory”. His literary criticisms, poems and volumes of essays were highly regarded. He was also noted as an author of ghost stories.

Bound in red cloth with gilt titling to spine. No dustjacket. Spine is sun bleached. Book has a signature of the original owner in pencil at the top of the first page dated 1911. There is a further less clear signature on pencil on the second page. The book was highly popular in its time, having been reprinted on at least 15 occasions. Tanning to edges and some pages as well as slight foxing to the front edge. Hardcover. Printed by John Murray 1911
