SIGNED: The Work Of Architect Richard England In Malta: A Research Towards A Contemporary Regionalism, With Introductory Notes On The Maltese Vernacular

Minimum Donation €149.00

Although still in his early thirties, Richard Englands work in Malta has already won him international acclaim. His works bear a particular binding relationship to the Island’s character and tradition. His approach is best summed up in his own words: “Buildings must pertain to the lands they are built on. As solutions to particular problems they should reflect the surrounding environment. A building, let us remember, is born from the practical needs of an individual people, and an individual country; and therefore should reflect their own unique character. Climate, materials, surroundings and background are the dominating factors: these are the elements which create particular qualities which help man to exist not as a number, but as an individual. Architecture should be man’s greatest contribution towards the maintaining of his individuality and recognition”. Ranging from churches and individual houses to apartments and carge tourist projects, his work shows remarkable maturity and quality. His understanding and love to the islands’ tradition are clearly emphasised in his “Notes on the Maltese Vernacular”
