This book traces in detail the history of a new Muslim cemetery in Malta, from its inception to its construction and completion in 1873-74. It investigates the process of commissioning and implementing this architectural project through an intricate set of relationships between the colonial authorities in Malta, then a British island-colony in the Mediterranean, and teh Ottoman, Tunisian and Moroccan authorities.

A tour of this wonderful building with Professor Thake is highly recommended, when the history comes alive. Whilst its position in the landscape once had a dramatic impact, sadly the surrounding buildings now slightly blur the effect. However, it still holds a sort of magical appeal.
