Description
His Master’s Voice, abbreviated HMV, is a trademark in the music business and for many years was the name of a large record label. The name was coined in 1899, following the title of a painting of the dog ‘Nipper’ listening to a wind-up phonograph cylinder. The painting was by English artist Francis Barraud, A.R.A. and entitled ‘His Master’s Voice’. This was His Master’s Voice’s most successful and longest lived portable, having been introduced in July 1931 and available right up to 1960. It is considered by many to be one of the best and was actually marketed by HMV as “THE WORLD’S FINEST PORTABLE”. It has a longer internal horn and the number 5 sound box (with aluminium diaphragm), together with the wider swan neck tone arm, made it much better at coping with the higher volume of later recordings. It includes single handed lid operation, automatic start/stop plus manual brake, 10” turntable and pivoted needle bowl. This model is finished in navy blue Rexine leathercloth with matching motor board, the internal fittings are chromium plated. A message from our extremely generous donor “I have always considered myself to be very fortunate and an added result of this has been my recent inheritance, which I have decided to share with your foundation. We Maltese are grateful for your most generous effort in supporting our country in its fundamental needs! Thank you”
