Vintage Olympia Portable SM2 Typewriter – Circa 1950s

Minimum Donation €35.00

A very much loved Olympia SM2 typewriter, sadly no longer in working order, but making a fun decorative item for a classical or contemporary interior – or to have on show in a secretarial school or office equipment showroom! The SM2, considered to be the Mercedes Benz of typewriters, was produced for office workers in West Germany during the 1950s. Olympia typewriters are known to be the finest machines, with quality German engineering unparalleled. This typically metal Olympia SM2 typewriter, light brown in colour, has tombstone black keys, a space bar and carriage knobs, typing in the standard Olympia sized type face and giving eleven letters to the inch. It has the Olympia logo in silver on the right side of the ribbon cover and the manufacturers details on the back with serial number. The original boxy-tweedy carry case is in functional condition, with working handle and metal closure. There are marks and age-related signs of wear in places (see images). The SM2 was classed as a portable, but is quite heavy. As earlier stated, this machine is no longer in working order, but with some love and care from a specialist in the typewriter field it could continue to bring joy. In the meantime it will make a striking show piece – a collectors dream and striking reminder to those who remember learning to type via ‘the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog’ method H:12 x W:27 x D:28cm

Description

Olympia typewriters are well-known for their durability and sleek German design. Once referred to as the ‘Mercedes-Benz’ of typewriters, Olympia’s products have lasted for decades, becoming the preferred make among various famous authors and scriptwriters. As you begin asking yourself which vintage typewriter is the best choice for you, take the best that Olympia has to offer into consideration and learn the story of how a German industrial business created one of the highest quality typewriters of the mid-20th century. The SM series began in 1949 and became the gold standard of Olympia typewriters. Overall, there were nine different models (SM-1 to SM-9) created. Originally, typewriters came in black, green, dark red and cream colours; but by the 1960s Olympia was offering SM models in bold colours such as orange, pink and robin’s egg blue. A medium-sized portable typewriter, the SM series was perfect for both professional and personal use and many contemporary authors swear by their SM-2s and SM-3s.
