Sweetheart jewellery was an intensely romantic and patriotic fashion, beginning in World War I and remaining through to the end of World War II. Soldiers would gift these pieces of jewellery to the wives and sweethearts who remained at home while they were fighting overseas. Many materials and metals were rationed during the great wars, so these pieces were made of alternative materials, such as wood or plastic. Silver was not a rationed material, and was used to create higher quality pieces. This type of jewellery was a reminder and a promise to fighting soldiers all over the world
