Description
Sam Glass has been a traditional Master Maker, Designer and Restorer of rocking horses since 1988 and although now officially retired due to ill health, his bespoke rocking horses continue to be highly sought. A true craftsman, he worked with love and care using his own designs based on the traditions of the past, with real horses as reference. He was the only maker at his workshop in County Durham, producing horses of true beauty for children and adults, with his wife Sarah (an artist, designer and craftswoman in her own right) assisting with painting – and lifting! For over 32 years Sam made and restored to the highest standard, sanding by hand, before painting with brushes and sponges – the same method as when the streets were powered by horses – with no modern spray painting or stencils used. They were then treated with freshly made Gesso, as used by great artists over the centuries. All leatherwork was bespoke and handmade by a British artisan maker of rocking horse tack. Originality was very important to Sam and his horses took many, many hours to bring to perfection, with a long waiting list of hopeful owners. Beautiful objects cannot be rushed, with the result that Sam Glass Rocking Horses have rightly become treasured heirlooms within families across the world. Benjamin is truly unique
