Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, was a senior British Army officer who served in the First World War, the Irish War of Independence and the Second World War. After the war he became Commander-in-Chief of the British Army in Germany and from 1948 to 1951 served as Chairman of the Commanders-in-Chief Committee of the Western Union. He finally served as NATO’s Deputy Supreme Allied Commander in Europe up until his retirement in 1958. He died in 1976 aged 88
