Description
Pre-owned. Many of the sources Chauncy used will no longer be available – but one must bear in mind that information collected from the owners of the properties are likely to give an overly rosy view of their ancestors. There is very little relating to the everyday life of the working man. Vol. 1: 592pp (pages 159 to 162 have come loose), hand trimmed pages. Vol. 2: 614pp. With many lithographic plates across the two volumes: mostly of large houses and seats of the county, with a few monuments. Includes a folding map of Hertfordshire in Vol.2. A pencil note (175) is written at the top of the 5th page. Boards are bright and have only little rubbing to edges, corners and spine ends; minor scuffing here and there but nothing significant. Bindings sound and still quite tight – hinges are still securely attached. Pages mostly clean, but generally there is some tanning and foxing and blotching to edges and some pages. Prelims and some edges rather browned. Map has no tears and still psysically intact. A Very Good set. Hardcover in half-tooled leather bindings: leather spines with raised bands, and leather reinforced corners. This second edition published by John Morse Mullinger, Bishops Stortford, 1826 and this was reprinted in 1975 (and is now out of print)
