How many Londoners who have heard the recent plea for a higher building system for London realise that if New York had to be rebuilt tomorrow there would be very little chance of its “sky-scraper” system being renewed? Yet if the unthinkable happened and New York were given such an opportunity as was presented to London after the Great Fire of 1666, she would not repeat the error into which the sky-scraper system has led her. No doubt we should see the resurrection of some strictly isolated and specially placed examples but it is unlikely that even these would be build on the scale or in the the style of the monstrous erections which now overshadow life in that city. For New York has had to acknowledge that the system is a failure; worse than a failure.
