Description
Pre-owned.The primary reason for her writing this true-to-life novel was to, hopefully, acquaint as much of the rest of the world as possible as to where Malta was, and what was going on there, of their dire plight, of their valour and determination.’ Published in 1944, this is a fascinating 221 page find. A Possible First Edition, rebound, Ex-Library copy in Good Condition. 13.25 x 19.6cm. A letter ‘J’ is written, possibly in white ink, on the spine, possibly as a library reference. The spine laso seems to be coated in a light layer of varnish. Pages 73 and 77 have a small bit of the top right corner of the page torn off. Some of the requisite library markings are present and a 6.95 x 17.14cm ‘summary strip’ (probably the front inside flap of the missing dust jacket) is attached to the back loose end page. From said strip, ‘”In Wings for Nikias” [the author] told the engrossing story of a young Greek boy who found a way to be a hero in his country’s struggle against the modern invader. The book is sprinkled, with many black and white drawings of varying dimensions, very nicely rendered, too, by the author, or by artist unknown. NOTE: Also featured, on two adjoining pages preceding the half title page, is a map of Malta and Gozo (and an inset, miniature map of Italy/Sicily/etc) all done in turquoise and off-white. Donated and valued by an accredited US Antiquarian Book Dealer. Hardcover. Published by GP Putnam’s Sons, New York 1944
