Description
The Phoenicians settled in Malta around the eighth century BC. Their use of writing marked the start of the island’s history, while Malta itself became an important stop on their trade routes. The island’s Phoenician and Punic achievements are placed in their right historical perspective, in the light of the latest archaeological discoveries and of scholarly contributions, made both before and simce the 1960s when their heritage started to be completely revalued. The Romans took over the island in 218 BC. Their far from negligible cultural heritage is presented in a most readable manner, that highlights the economic, social and political aspects of the period, which also had noteworthy artistic expressions.
