Four Antique English Delft Tiles With Bevelled Edges – Circa 1750

Minimum Donation €350.00

Delft tiles are beautiful collectibles, rare to find and make great conversation pieces. Delftware was produced in England from about 1550 until the late 18th Century, mainly in London, Bristol and Liverpool. It was usually less fine than that made in Holland, with the English works producing a wide range of pottery. ‘Delft blue’ became world famous, with it eventually becoming the recognised name for all blue and white earthenware, even if not actually made in Delft. Delft was given a tin-based glaze, producing a white, glossy and easily painted surface, often painted with scenes from daily life (men on horseback, soldiers, people at work, ships, children playing, landscapes) along with scenes from the Bible and classical mythology. Unmarked set of four matching with circular frame and floral motifs at corners depicting galleons with swans, castle with flag, house by a river with swans and a house with landscape view and birds flying. Some nibbles and chips to edges and corners, some crazing, no major cracks, overall very good age related wear (formerly from fire surround) – see images H:12.5 x W:12.5 x D:0.6cm
