Pre-owned. Text in Hungarian, English and German. Exerpt from the introduction: Esztergom is one of Hungary’s most important historic towns. It is associated not only with royalty, famous events, rich palaces and churches, but also with bloody massacres, plundering. devastation – and reconstruction. In fact, the history of Esztergom mirrors the history of the entire Hungarian nation. There is no period in the 1000 years of Hungary’s past during which Esztergom fails to feature in one way or another. But what became of the old royal seat and the once-famous buildings which adorned it? The answer to this and to many other questions concerning the old town must be sought in the vicissitudes of earlier centuries. Medieval Esztergom lies beneath the present-day town and can only be explored by means of archaeological excavation. The old Ezstergom was destroyed during the time of Ottoman rule, which in Hungary lasted for 150 years. Many of the town’s inhabitants were either killed or enslaved; others managed to flee. After the Turks had been driven out, newcomers cleared away the ruins and built a new settlement on the site of the old one. In good condition, with some foxing to the first and last few pages. Hardcover. Published by Corvina K, Budapest 1985
