Foreword: As Salesians of Don Bosco we are extremely happy to publish yet another book in collaboration with Heritage Malta. This time it is dedicated to the frescoes of Matteo Perez d’Aleccio, in the Grand Masters’ Palace, Valletta. The d’Aleccio frescoes were commissioned by Grand Master Fra Jean L’Evesque de La Cassiere, to commemorate the Great Siege of 1565, the most important victory of the Sovereign Military and Hospitaller order of St John of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta. Through this book we would like to present one of the greatest treasures of Malta to the people at large especially to those who cannot visit Malta to see and enjoy them in loco. We feel particularly proud that his unique book is yet another special representation of Malta to the world. The growing awareness for culture in Europe, keeping in mind that the Great Siege was fought by men coming from different European states, ought to remind us that we as Maltese people, have a particular responsibility to increase in our hearts the love and attention to all that makes up our cultural and artistic patrimony. We need to collaborate together to defend, secure and appreciate the many treasures that form part of our glorious history – Fr. Charles Cini SDB – Editor. Softcover.
