Pre-owned. The Channings generates similar tension from much smaller stakes: someone has spilled ink on a choirboy’s gown, 20 pounds are missing, and a young man burns a candle in his room half the night for reasons he refuses to reveal. In the English cathedral town of Helstonleigh, such enigmas loom large, and Mrs. Henry Wood shows how such seemingly small mysteries can change the fates of entire families – and how the suspense of such mysteries can keep the reader turning the pages. Bound in dark red cloth with gilt lettering and motif to spine. Boards and spine have general wear and tear – although the front board has a large mark which tould have been caused by liquid. Book is inscribed in ink with the original owners name on the second page, and the price of “60p” is written in pencil on the facing page.corners bumped and spine has some crushing at the lower end. Binding still relatively tight for a book of this age. Hardcover. Published by Collins Clear Type Press, London. Undated, estimated early 1930s
