L’Ami Des Enfants is a famous children’s storybook written in 1782, with this edition dating from 1890. These are not tales, but 84 small stories rooted in the reality of the world of children. The 9 drawings of the large illustrations date from 1782. There are about a hundred small illustrations in the texts; some were made in 1782 and much of it dates back to the 1890s. Of course, everything happened during the last quarter of the 18th century, in France!

Description

Arnaud Berquin was born in Bordeaux in 1747. He was the son of Jean Berquin, a merchant in Bordeaux and he became tutor to the two daughters of the publisher Charles Joseph Panckoucke. Berquin began with two poetic collections, Idylls and Romances. Soon, devoting his pen to the instruction of the children whom he loved very much, he successively published the Friend of the Children, the Friend of the Adolescence, the Special Instruction to the knowledge of the nature (free translation of the Miss Trimmer), Sandford and Merton (translation of Thomas Day’s work), Little Grandisson, the Village Library, the Family Book. Known especially for his Children’s Friend, he specializes in youth literature. Her children’s books enjoyed great popularity and were very often reprinted throughout the nineteenth century and translated, especially in German by Princess Alexandra of Bavaria.
