Flowers Of The Mediterranean By Oleg Polunin And Anthony Huxley

Minimum Donation €65.00

This book, designed as a guide to the rich and fascinating flora of the Mediterranean, from Spain to Greece, Turkey and Lebanon, is the first of its kind to be published in Britain. It describes over 700 plants; 311 of these are illustrated in full colour
from close-up photographs taken on the spot, and 128 more in line drawings. Additionally, there are 61 drawings of botanical details in the text. The selection of plants is mainly of those likely to be seen by the tourist visiting the coastal zone and classical sites, though a number of less common, specially beautiful plants are included and a special feature is made of orchids.
The descriptive text is thoroughly sound and up-to-date botanically, and avoids jargon, so that the book can be used alike by the keen amateur botanist and those with little technical knowledge, who will be helped by an extensive illustrated terms. The introductory glossary of essential account of the climate, the typical plant communities of the Mediterranean zone, and man’s effect upon them, is particularly interesting, and another fascinating feature is the reference, where applicable, to uses and mentions of the plants in antiquity, in the Bible, and today.
Oleg Polunin teaches botany at Charterhouse, and has made botanical excursions to many parts of the Mediterranean, including Morocco and Turkey, as well as to the Himalayas. Anthony Huxley, assistant editor of Amateur Gardening, is the author of several gardening books and has also made many botanical expeditions in Europe. Both authors are first-class photographers, as this book amply demonstrates
