John Soar began his career as a chemical engineer, then entered academic work as a lecturer in chemical engineering design at North-East London Polytechnic. After some years as an inspector of Further Education, he became principal of a college in South-West England. For many years he has painted in various media, but in 1984 he became a full-time painter specialising in pastel landscapes. His inspiration is drawn from the local countryside, studying closely its changes through the seasons, and hence his main painting theme is landscapes. He has also developed techniques with pastels to produce miniature landscapes. He is a member of the United Society of Artists, the Hilliard Society of Miniaturists and the Guild of Wiltshire Artists.
